Here's an update to my situation. My supplying dealer wanted to charge £99 to carry out the diagnostic. I had a long chat with one of the service advisers who after speaking to her manager was able to reduce the price to £49, which I was happy with. The car went in this morning and the fault was traced to a defective DPF sensor. I was quoted £218, including the diagnostic charge, to do the work. I asked about customer care, given the car is just under 4 years old, and the receptionist popped inside the office and emerged about a minute later to say they could do the repair on a basis of 70/30, with me paying 30% of the total bill. So, for a grand total of £78.50, including the diagnostic charge, my car is now sorted!

Thank to all who helped out on this one, with the exception of Uwe on the Ross Tech forum, who showed himself up as a complete bell end with his attitude.

    Hi all,
I've had my Golf TDi 1.6 mk6 from new.
I bought it back in 2010 and it's now up to 92k on the clock.
Last year the Glow Plugs Warning light started flashing a few weeks later on the Engine Management light came on. The car ran fine, no limp mode issues. I had a diagnostic session done on the car, turned out one of the lamba sensors and glow plugs needed to be replaced
The Glow Plugs light would come on and off, the Engine Management light would flash on occasion.
12 months later I got round to having the sensor and glow plugs replaced.
As I drove the car out of the garage the Glow Plugs light started blinking and then later the Engine Management light came on permanent.
The garage advised that it was one of the other sensors that also needed to be replaced, however on further inspection, they advised that it is the EGR valve that needs to be replaced. Again there is no problem with the car - it runs fine, no loss in power.

I'd like to ask the fellow members here - has anyone else had the Engine Management light on permanent and the Glow Plugs light starts flashing after 2 mins of driving (for 30 secs), yet the car still runs fine?

Heh Bob. Engine management light coming on is a known problem with VW older vehicles. I've had an old Polo, 1.6 Golf S and a 1.9 Jetta. My mother had a 1.4 Polo and my two mates both had 2.0 Golf and Golf GT all with engine management lights coming on at some stage and in most cases staying on. Numerous garage trips, and even an argument with a dealer under a warranty timeframe didn't resolve it. Until my garage which the head mechanic owned a Polo and a Jetta did the computer checks. Its seems to be an overzealous sensor on the exhaust system. Nothing serious. I drove all three of the cars I had with it on permanently. Although, I hope it doesn't come on my 2011 Golf Match. But as you can see it hasn't deterred me from VW.
