Seems my water pump has failed on 2.5TDi Allroad. Most of the belt has shredded and the car stopped. All the water is gone. My concern is timing belts going normally cause major damage.
Is this the case on 2.5 V6 Tdi. A mate of mine had the same issue but is was only rocker arm damage.

Any experiences of said timing belts going ?

    Cheers

The rocker arms are intentionally made weak so if you are lucky they will smash before the valves bend. If not you might as well find a 2nd hand engine...

    Hi,

My water pump went at 119000 miles on my 2.5 Tdi Avant.
Got it home and at first the garage told me that they thought I had got away with a new belt, pump etc.
On picking it up I heard a tappity tap sound, didn't sound too much and could only be heard at 2000rpm plus.
The 'Brain Surgeons" at the garage said it was probably a stuck 'something' (I can't remember now) and I should give it a burn on the local D/C.
For some reason, probably common sense I didn't and , over the next two weeks as the sound appeared at a reducing rev range I knew something was wriong.
Took it back and the garage hadn't checked the cams and one of them had lost it's hardening.
This resulted in another large bill and no apology for their lack of professionalism.

Got away without any damage to valves though and the car is still with me at 162000 and it seems to be getting better with age if that's possible.

When the belt is due, next time (at 200000 miles) I will treat it to a new pump, just to be safe.

PS That garage is not visited any more.
