Looking for some advice please, I have two questions below about my A5 and oil consumption. I know this is an old and repeated problem for the 2.0T, so I'm not looking to confirm that the engine is an oil guzzler / the old piston ring problem.

Background (sorry it's a bit long): it's a 58 plate 2.0T petrol model. I bought privately and it has no warranty. It's burning too much oil, much more than 0.5l per 600 miles (1000km) specified in the handbook.

So far an independent specialist garage has changed what they called the oil separator for £150 as he said it was being mixed in and burnt off. Straight after the repair it was showing max oil on the MMI, and held that position for 200 miles. It's now suddenly halfway between min and max on the MMI, which I understand represents not total engine oil (4.7l), but the top most litre in the engine meaning it has burnt 0.5l in 200 miles. I also bought a manual dipstick to check and confirmed.

    Questions are:

    1) Have people experienced such a drop in engine oil after a repair in around 200-300 miles? I saw on another forum that after such a repair it can need a little oil to work into the engine, to compensate for the fact it was previously just being burned off.

    2) If my piston rings are knackered (as I fear), what are my chances of pushing audi uk to support with the cost of the £4-5k bill, on the basis this is clearly a manufacturer problem, and not general wear and tear.

    Thanks

What miles are on the car and what sort of service history does it have?

    Hi,

It's got a full audi service history, including the most recent in Feb 2014. 65K miles on the clock

Sorry to jump onto the wrong forum, but I am currently researching this issue because I have the same problem with my 59 plate A4 Avant. You will find loads of posts on the 2.0T oil issue on Audi-sport.net, for example http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/audi-s4-a4-a4-cab-b8-chassis/217148-2-0t-oil-issue-engine-repair-cost.html and http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/audi-s4-a4-a4-cab-b8-chassis/180673-engine-rebuild-required-b8-%4068k.html

Ultimately owners of 2.0T chain driven Audis registered between 2009 and 2011 are suffering from oil issues. Audi will not give a definitive answer to the problem until you have had an oil consumption test which will cost between £60 and £120.

My car is now on just over 66k and is using 1.56 litres of oil per 1000km! My local Audi dealer has given me a good will gesture quote of £2,500 because I have had all work and services completed by them. I also tried a garage in South Wales who quoted me £3,700, rather than the £4,200.

My biggest gripe is that Audi are aware this is an issue, but obviously not willing to accept responsibility; then charging owners from nothing to upwards of £6,000 on vehicles out of warranty. I had advised my local garage that I have written to Audi UK because I knew this was a common problem, so wasn’t happy to pay for the repair. He said that was my best option because he has done as much as he can to help. He indirectly admitted it was a common problem, but said they have been advised what to tell customers by Audi UK.

I can almost guarantee you that if you were to take your car into the garage and indicate there’s a problem, they will be able to pull out a recent customer receipt for a 2.0T engine rebuild. It’s happened on both occasions for us and I am going to try a couple of other garages just to reconfirm my findings.

I am on the war path!!

The thirsty oil use on 2.0TFSI engines was covered in last night's Watchdog

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/arti...uzzling-issues

You might be able to get it fixed free of charge (at Audi's discretion) even if your car is out of warranty.

I have had our A4 2.0TFSI for a month today, covered only 300 miles and topped up with 3 litres of oil already.
I didn't know about this known issue until I actually bought the car. It is a 2010 model and was not bought via the Audi network (IE non-franchise garage).

Audi are currently carrying out free oil consumption tests, if you contact your local dealer they should be able to book you in for this just as mine have.
If they want to charge you for this service then contact Audi UK customer service. I messaged them via their official Facebook page as my local dealer wanted to charge me for the check but are now doing it for free after Audi UK contacted them.
If they find a fault it is being looked at "case by case" and is at the dealers discretion if they will carry out repairs out of warranty (so I have been told by Audi UK)... Either way Audi UK told me to contact them if I had any issues or needed any more help.

If you have a full Audi service history I find it very unlikely that they will not cover the cost of the repair... My only issue is I have a full main dealer history up until last month where the non-franchised garage done a service last month on handover!

Sounds like you will get this fixed. If not, maybe mention you saw Watchdog and will get in touch with them. I doubt Audi UK want continued bad publicity on this.

On the mmi oil level, how much does the max and min represent? 0.5 liter? 1liter? Also does it happen to any other VAG car like Seat?

800 miles got mine from max to min
