  1. Passat 1.9TDI Engine Smoking

I'm new to the UK (in the process of moving here from the US) and have hired a Passat Estate 1.9TDI with only 1473 miles on it. The first day I drove it the engine began smoking to the point where a passerby actually stopped me out of concern that my car was on fire. When we opened the bonnet we could see white smoke coming from the right side of the engine block. When I called the rental company they told me this was normal for a diesel car and I just needed to let it warm up. I had the engine running for at least 10 minutes while I tried to figure out all the controls and then only drove it about a mile in total before this happened.

This just seems bizarre to me, but I have never had a diesel car before. Is this normal?
