I've been tempted to get a remap for a few years now and recently decided to have a look about again.

One in particular caught my eye; they said they have found a way to "unlock" the car to make it think it’s a 170...............stay with me here…, and then they map that giving them 206.

Is 206 a bit too much for some of the components, obviously when you put the boot down the extra power will cause extra ware but are we looking at potential catastrophic engine failure?

    What you guys think?

If the map is from a well known mapper/company then I wouldn't be too worried.

So is that from 140bhp right up to 204bhp? Personally from a mechanical point of view I wouldn't bother. If I was buying a 2.0 140 second hand that had reviously been run at 204bhp I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. The clutch isn't designed to take it, the gear ratios will be wrong, then theres all the unseen bits like the fill rate of the DPF. You'd be better of selling it and either buying a 2.0 tdi 177 or waiting for the 2.0TDi 190bhp, (which is already phasing in on the A6). I imagine it won't be too long before it makes it on the A4 - the next version perhaps?

In fact thinking on it...I think you can get the 3.0TDi at 204bhp now...with bag loads more torque to boot!

Personally I'd get one of these.. Diesel Tuning box for Audi A4 2.0 Tdi 170ps Cr Stage 2 (crd-t)

I have been running this tuning box on my 177 2.0TDI and the results are excellent, I've covered around 5000 miles so far and haven't suffered any issues. The support from the team at DTUK is also excellent and it's much easier than breaking into ECU's to remap them.

Your sig says you have a 143 so it would be this box Diesel Tuning box for Audi A4 2.0 Tdi 143 Ps Cr Stage 2 (crd-t)

    Thanks for the response guys.
What everyone has said is exactly what I have been thinking myself. Done some digging about the mapper and there has been a good few complaints and component failures....... So that's a no then!!!

Starting to come round to the box now, have always been in favour or the map but the boxes seem easier and more flexible.
DTUK box taking it to 185 I think is a reasonable and manageable figure for the engine as I feel that currently the car gives the impression that its capable of more but is been held back.

    Thanks again

I can certainly say from experience that you won't be disappointed if you buy the tuning box you should also get a forum discount of £80 I think...

Without steering this thread off topic....I don't suppose you know how the tuning box works do you? I only ask because I've heard of some "tuning boxes" that are basically just a resistor which makes the engine constantly run rich by overriding the MAF sensor input (but does this through ODBII). I know the newer A4s (post 2010 I think) have a write-protected ECU to prevent the map settings being changed. If the tuning box is actually doing something active and isn't just "fooling" the ECU I might consider one too...

Hopefully this article will answer your question http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/...ve-a-bad-name/

I went through the same dilemma before I made my decision Remap or Tuning Box? There is a thread on the forum which charts my journey so far. All I can say is that I have complete faith in the DTUK product and the team, I have nothing to gain by telling you this, I'm not affiliated to them in any way, I am just a happy customer who is using the product and want to pass on what I've learned by going through this process.

Don't get me wrong I'm not against a remap, I think they will deliver a result that is equally as good, it's just a messier process and not as warranty friendly.

Equaly I wouldn't buy a tuning box from any one but DTUK because after my research they are the only people to sell a product that is a truly active and intelligent addition to the system, rather than a resistor in a box.

I have had fully modified and remapped cars in the past. I traditionally would not have touched a tuning box, but this time around, I did some research and I have also brought the above box for mine from DTUK and do not regret it!
