I will most likely be ordering a new Golf GT 1.4 ACT tomorrow, but am still undecided about the gearbox.

Any views one way or the other, and have you been pleased with, or regretted your decision, particularly with this engine ?

I'm getting my first manual car in 8 yrs in 2 wks :-). TBH the dsg is great!!!. I just fancy a change. I think I would go back to DSG.

I had a nightmare journey the other day and was glad that I had my DSG. It all depends on your driving & if like me you suffer from pain in your left foot.

Like one of my friends said, you are going back to washing up by hand. instead of using a dish washer.

I had a loan of a 1.4TSI Mk7 with DSG for 5 days recently whilst my Mk6 manual was in for bodywork, service and MOT. I have to say I really really liked - it had the 7 speed box and changes were imperceptible - in fact I had to look at the console to even see what gear the box was in! I didn't get to grips with the manual override or other niceties but my overall impression was that it made the driving experience so much less stressful and relaxing - I'll be looking at a new Mk7 next year and will definitely be adding DSG. Even my wife liked it!

We have a 1.4TSi GT with DSG, bought new just over a year ago. Engine/gearbox combination is fantastic and would recommend without hesitation. Try one and you'll be hooked

another vote for DSG with this engine. If I was buying a 2.0tdi I might go for manual, but with the 1.4tsi, the DSG works really well and gives great fuel economy.

I have owned a lot of cars with auto box's including an 'S' class merc and can honestly say the DSG box is the best yet. I cannot fault it. Over 40 mpg around town and middle 50's on a run and the power to go with it.

FWIW my old man at the age of 69 just bought an A3 with this engine gearbox combo - his first ever auto - and absolutely loves it. He won't stop going on about it.

    Many thanks for the feedback.

I've now driven the cars, and the DSG gearbox is indeed excellent. However, as my annual mileage is quite low (<6000 miles), and mainly short journeys, I have decided I probably wouldn't benefit from DSG that much. So, I have now ordered the following:

Golf GT 1.4 TSI ACT 5 door manual.
    Pacific blue.
    Shetland alcantara.
    Climate control.
    Winter pack

    Delivery expected in July.....

Hello, this is my first post here. I pick up my 1.4TSI ACT with DSG box tomorrow. I went for DSG as I think it suits the engine and car very well, and changes gears a lot more quickly and smoothly than I can. The down side is the cost but if you're spending a lot of money on a new car you may as well get one you really like and I paid for the gear box instead of falling for any other options. This replaces an Audi A1 1.6TDi and will be my first petrol engined car for a long time, I'm quite looking forward to returning to petrol after a long time. The 1.4TSI is close enough on the official combined to be competitive on running costs with a diesel, especially with the cheaper cost of fuel. I'll be interesting what it gets in real life as the A1 TDi although a lovely little car was very disappointing in terms of mpg.

Good decision. The DSG is good but not unflappable. Better than most auto gearboxes I have driven but one or two foibles leave me wanting a gear lever.
Yes it is efficient for an auto but when they go wrong, they cost $$$$$
