    Hi

Just found this forum and finding it very helpful. I have a Golf GTi 16V MK2 K series engine, 150,000 miles and 2nd owner from new which has had cylinder head/gasket issue for some time which has now gone pop. Did use small amounts of coolant over a period and a small amount of vapour from the exhaust but then suddenly went terminal with water going by the jug full and the dreaded cream coloured oil on the dip stick and oil filler cap.

Mate is a mechanic and reckons about a grand to strip and possibly skim and rebuild the head. Does that sound fair? Seems a lot but then it is a big job I guess. Anyone found a good/reliable head replacement supplier? There are a few on Flebay but you have no idea what you are getting and I don't want to pay £400 for a dud and all the cost of fixing and re-doing over again. Anyone tried fixing it themselves? Fair at spannering but lack special tools so may be out of my league....

    Thanks

about a grand to do a head gasket on a kr, i think you need to find a new mate. even stripping the head, lapping all the valves and doing it very properly would not result in a bill of a grand. its not exactly a big job in the grand scheme of things. how many hours labour is he expecting .

It cost us £250 to have the head gasket replaced and head reconditioned in our 8v carb model. The fact it has an extra 8 valves means it will cost a little more due to the extra work in re-grinding them, new valve guides, stem seals and potentially new seats. But that shouldn't equate to more than another £100.

I was thinking of getting a full TSR refurbished cylinder head at about £470 exchange with all the work done as the seals are leaking and the head is bound to be warped due to the length of time it had been using water. Anyone had experience of these at all? Are they reliable/worth the cost? Just change the cam belt and throw on the new gasket and hopefully job done...need to get it running again for the good weather.

TSR heads are very good, normally paired with a 1.9 block. £470 seems reasonable for an upgraded head, and as you say, providing it's definitely had all this work done and has the paperwork to back it up, then could be worthwhile. Would be interesting to know how the power delivery differs from a normal 16v. As I'll be honest, ours is pretty brutal as it is!

Back on the road again Spent a lot for other work including new calipers, hand brake cables, engine mounts, cam belts etc, etc. Goes like a dream again but has an intermittent issue with flickering oil pressure light sometimes at idle after running for a while, goes out when driven again. Oli levels are fine and pump was checked so maybe a dodgy sensor. Anyone know which one to look at, there are a few about on the oil cooler and head? Same with the temperature light, flickers now and again but water level is fine and the guage stays at half way. Fan kicks in quite often but it always did when driven in the summer. Seems all to be working and no obvious issues other than the occasional red lights...

No updates to this I guess..just left as it was and no real issues other than the annoying red oil light now and again. Newer and more serious issues is battery/alternator. Was going flat every few days so put in a heavy duty GSF lump as the old battery was quite old and was OK for 4-5 days then flat as a pancake. Jump start and runs fine and 13.4 to 14 volts on the terminals when running but seems not to charge up. Drive it a bit and charge is OK for a short while then just drops to 11 volts and clicks dead on turn over. Nothing obvious left on and unplugged alarm and interior lights etc in case of current draw when off. Is it worth a new alternator or pursuing current draw somewhere in the system??
