Hi, my 2001 1.9 TDi, AVB 100HP engine and 144k on clock is losing a lot of oil from the EGR vent holes, the side of the engine is soaked, its dripping from underneath when I park and the oil level dropped from max to not showing on the dipstick at all over a few months.

I've googled and forum searched and now understand small leakage from the vents is normal due to turbo seal leakage and crank vent pipe pulling in oil mist, but this is a lot of oil so I have to top it up every couple of weeks. It started around mid-2013 and got advisory on MOT but is now much worse.

Has anyone had this trouble as badly and cured it?

Oil emerging from there is a worn valve but not important. Any oil in there comes from either the breather or turbo so firstly take off the lower pipe to the intercooler and see how much oil is in there. It may just be that your cam cover is blocked but normally it is a worn turbo. If it is not excessive, leave it alone.

I had this problem on a 6n2 1.4tdi and removed the egr and manifold. I cleaned both. I soaked the egr valve in petrol cleaned it with a toothbrush and also checked the vacuum valve(sic?) whilst working the piston many times to free it up (hopefully).
5 thou miles later and no oil whatsoever.
    Hope you find this useful

I had this problem a few years ago, a new EGR £135 is all you need!

its blowpass and acceptable, at any time there can be nearly half a litre running around the charge pressure circuit so it will seep from the inter cooler connections and egr/intake changeover flap

the oil separator in the rocker will breath hard and can be mistaken for back pressure from the crankcase

its just build up, drain the excess oil from the intercooler and pipes and whilst your there fell the turbine impeller for excessive lateral movement to be safe

Not the normal leak, a replacement EGR is the way to go!

sounds like you have high oil consumption and suspect the egr is not the cause, check the turbo for starters mine has covered 130k and rarely needs a top up, also my egr is dirtier than a jordans bosh

Why do you suspect that the EGR is not the cause?
My AVB engined tdi had a small oil leak around the EGR, I removed the EGR and inlet manifold, the turbo hoses and intercooler, cleaned all and re-fitted, result! no more oil leaking.
UNTIL!! the EGR oil seal tore and it started playing tunes as it spat oil out, oil everywhere just as the poster experienced, solution, a new EGR, 4 years down the line and no more oil leaks, except the normal
ones, read the posts, first, then comment (by the way, what is a jordans bosh?)

The EGR valve itself is not the "cause" it is a symptom or an indication as it does not cause the oil to get in there, it just shows its presence more clearly and the spring clip junctions also tend to show the oil. The oil is still in there and it is deciding whether that oil is excessive or not.

Fact, EGRs always leak a little oil, oil accumulates in the turbo system (I have tapped the lowest section of the intercooler on mine and drain about 200ml at each service)
The EGR can and does fail, this affects the crankcase vent system and an awful lot of oil is spat out of the EGR, it is therefore a cause and not a symptom, if you ever see this
problem you will have no trouble deciding weather it is excessive or not.
