    Hi,
I have a MK7 Polo 1.4 TDI, and it's making a nasty clunking noise over pot holes and speed bumps, even at very slow speeds. I have checked the anti roll bar link arms, and they are solid, but when I gently rock the wheel back and forth (jacked up) the drive shafts have a slight amount of play before they engage, this makes a metal on metal knocking noise. I am assuming this is where the noise is coming from.
It seems a bit strange as the drive shafts are fine round corners, I only get the noise over bumps. Drive shafts are obviously expensive so I don't want to have to replace them if I don't have to.
Not sure where to go from here, and the MOT is due soon so would like it fixed. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

its not going to be the driveshafts. it will be either a bottom ball joint or arb link, most likely. the mot will probably find it for you and fail it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've checked the ARB links and they seem ok, so i'll check the bottom ball joint now. Cheers

the problem is, a ball joint thats got play can be hard to identify if its 'loaded', i.e. got any pressure on it. jack it up and they are all loaded and it can be hard to find one thats loose. sometimes you can though. you need a big lever to get in and lift and lower the anti roll bar and move everything in all directions. something will be loose. my mot tester has a new ramp with an air powered shaker plate. this can find worn out joints that you cannot find any other way apart from dismantling.
