Several times over the past month I noticed upon starting the car the windscreen de-mist would not work. The light would come on when the button was pressed but no fan action. Depending upon the journey time, it might work if I pressed it later on but not always. Also upon subsequent investigation I found the car would take longer than normal to heat up if this occurred as the fans didn't appear to be blowing at all & changing the fan speed on the dash had no effect.
The rest of the time, fans work as normal & car heats up as expected.
Haven't got access to VCDS yet to scan for fault codes (still waiting for VCDS Mobile to be released! )

Could it be a dodgy sensor somewhere or faulty fan? Pollen filters were changed a couple of months back so should be clear.

Got a scan done today by a friend with VCDS and it churned out 01273 - Fresh Air Blower (V2) - 009 Open or Short to ground.
We did a diagnostics of the various flap motors and they were ok but when it got to the blower it increased the voltage but no sound from the blower.
Weirdly though the fan will work if it is cold (i.e. on first start in the morning), if I get back in later however though it won't work which suggests its temperature related.
I can't seem to find if mine (59 facelift) has a thermal resistor like older vehicles or if it is just a blower with control unit attached. Crasher had some useful info in this post I found:
"01273" fault code, part code descriptions.

Am I right in thinking the blower unit is in the plenum chamber ?

There is a technical bulletin that says that there was an issue with the blower motor brushes.

bits taken from it as not allowed to post the whole item.

"Sporadic entry in air conditioning control unit "1273 fresh air blower V2, disruption/Short circuit to earth".
"Sometimes in connection with entry"1844 control unit for fresh air blower J126, incorrect".

    Technical Background
Clamping force of carbon brushes intermittently too low.

The repair operation is to replace the blower motor.

This is covered on the Audi warranty if you have it.

Thanks for this, mine is having exactly the same issue. My fault code wasn't exactly the same but it did refer to a short circuit. My mechanic had concluded a new blower as well.

Any idea how much they cost? Preparing for the worst.....

That's the no for the blower on the Russian site and when you Google it it comes up as the motor.

There may be a model letter change if they have upgraded the unit.

I found the actual part number after a bit of investigation under the bonnet which is 4F0 820 155 F
There are no recalls on this and not covered by warranty according the local Audi dealer.
I'm tempted to get it out and take it apart for a good clean but it looks like a right PITA to get it out!!
Anyone managed it successfully? It looks like the wipers have to come off and everything.

Technical product information Transaction No.: 2026342/1
A4, A5, Q5, A6, entry on fresh air blower V2 in air conditioning control Release date: 10-May-2011

as this says warranty account codes on it.
