    2000 Passat TDi 115

Read a number of issues around the bonnet catch sticking and unable to release, which I've experienced, but now I have the opposite issue.

The bonnet will catch on the safty catch but not lock down properly. It takes a number of slams to get it to shut only for it to 'pop' onto the safety catch once I'm driving. It has also jumped once after being sat outside fine for an hour which set the alarm off!! I can see a little bit of wear on the catch but not sure if this is causing it or if there should be some other things I should look for or if any one else has had this issue before I head off to the scrap yard for a replacement.

    Cheers

first off make sure the cable release isn't sticking at all. push the handle all the way back and see if that helps. if not, remove catch and give it all a good clean. its sticking , thats all. just needs some tlc.

The bonnet cable is in 2 parts
I had to replace the cable from the catch to the junction box under the plastic scuttle panel because the outer cable had split and expanded so in turn not allowing enough slack for the catch to close ! Cable was under a tenner from vw

Yeah eventually got it sorted. Ended up replacing both parts of the cable as we weren't sure exactly which part was at fault at first. The part from the catch to the junction box was corroded and stretched as you say. Got a new cable from the scrap yard, but was interesting that all the diesel Passats had the cables going or gone in the same place, but the petrol ones were fine, assume its to do with where the air intake is located.

When we first fitted the new cable, the bonnet still wouldn't lock down, but a bit moving round of the cable and its sorted.
