2.4 Petrol Excess Exhaust

Hi all. I have an A6 Avant 2.4 06 plate full Audi fsh and 80k miles. I have excessive exhaust fumes more visible when driving than idle and would like some help on identifying the cause. It is white smoke not blue and there is no water loss but the car uses appox 1L of oil per 1,000 miles which I am told is ok and there seems to be no loss of performance. It has been visible throughout the year so is not a cold start issue. I have heard of the egr valve as a possible cause but would welcome any input from forum members. Thank you.

Head gasket? No?

When was it last serviced?

March 2012, only done 5,000 since last service and car generally seems fine, no other visible symptoms. I don't think it is the head gasket, just lots of exhaust fumes.
