    Hi

I'm a newbie to the forum and hoping someone can assist me with this question

There is loads of info on the multitronic box fluid change - but next to nothing in relation to the 6spd manual gearbox on the Quattro.

From what I have managed to gather so far the 3.0tdi Quattro gearbox holds 3.2 litre and the rear diff holds 1.0 litre - spec is fully synthetic 75w90 gear oil - GL5

The gearbox is apparently not fill to spill - rather should sit 2mm +/- 1mm below the lip.

I know Audi state that the gearbox is sealed for life, etc... but having seen the condition of some oil from supposedly sealed for life gearboxes I would rather not take the chance; besides what do Audi classify as 'life' on a gearbox...

Has anyone carried this out as a DIY and if so have they got an advice or pointers please; if not then I may have to be a guinnea pig and post back for future reference.

Many thanks for any advice/replies and Merry Xmas.

    Welcome to the forum AW!!

I know tips are 80k miles (IIRC Audi guarantee the trans for 80k miles!) or less and manuals 100k or less.

I asked the diff question on here myself a few months back but didn't get any replies, luckily have a liter of 75w90 GL5 in the garage so at least useful for me to know.

ATB and keep us posted...if the diff is easily DIY then post up some pics so I can have a bash myself!

    Hi Mark

Thanks for the reply - I was surprised how little info there actually is on the manual transmission. I chose manual having seen so many threads in relation to motronic issues.

Someone suggested I try the A4 forum instead as they choose manual more often.

Will post up some pics once I do the change.

Multitronic do seem to have issues, however I thought that all quattro's whether 2.7 or 3.0 used tiptronic and thankfully those are more-or-less trouble free!

Thanks it would be great to see a guide for the diff.

Hi - just to update - completed the rear diff oil change and the manual transmission fluid change as the afternoon was not forecasting rain or 70mph winds!!

My rear Diff quantity was wrong in my 1st post - should read 1.5 litres in the rear diff (as it is the 01R ETS diff)

Jacked up all four corners and used spirit level to get pretty level.

Removed front and rear fill plugs (10mm hex/allen head socket)

Removed front and rear drains (10mm hex/allen socket) - drained off approx 1.3l from rear and 3.1 litres from g/box - pretty dark in colour.

Refitted drain plugs - torque to 40Nm

Filled rear diff with 1.5 l

    Filled g/box with 3.2 l

Millers Fully synthetic 75w90 transmission oil

Refitted fill plugs + torque to 40Nm.

Been for a drive - all seems ok

    AW, some questions

    1) How long did each job take you?
    2) Did you honestly use 4 x jacks or did you use axle stands?
    3) I know the level bit is required or the tranny but is it also for the diff?
    4) What did the old diff oil look like?

If level is required for the rear diff I'll probably drive it onto ramps and centrally jack up the rear from a central position...but not until more clement weather.

    Hi Mark

Once the car is in the air the job is pretty quick - probably 15 mins for rear diff and 30 mins for g/box.

Car ideally needs to be level as rear diff is fill to spill - you also need to know what type of rear diff (0AR or 01R) and then what sub type so you get the right amount in ( I think depending on rear diff can be 0.9, 1.0 or 1.5 litres capacity) - type is stamped on the rear diff casing; I also heard that 0AR is silver and 01R is black.

I used 4 jacks as ramps wouldn't work due to car ground clearance (S-Line Le Mans); the bumpers (front and rear) would hit ramps before wheels/tyres.

Old oil was pretty dark - the new stuff was clear/transparent by comparison.

I haven't had chance to identify alternative jacking points on car - so the 4 designated points allowed me full access to the centreline of the car - certainly wouldn't have wanted to do it in the rain!!

This is interesting - at 89k miles it sounds like I should be doing this.
