There is a Bosch auxiliary electric water pump situated on the left hand side of the V5 engine. Two questions - 1, what is it there for, and 2, should it start ticking (pumping) as soon as you turn the ignition on and carry on ticking for about 10 minutes after the ignition has been switched off (even if car has not been started) ?

Just getting used my first Bora and loving the growl of the V5 (reminds me of the 5 cylinder Audi Coupe I had a few years ago!

Its to asist coolant circulation and will activate when it sees the ignition switched off,it is goverend by the fan control unit which tells it to switch on\off.It will run on for as long as the fancontrol unit demmands and in some cases it will drain the battery if defective or water ingress accross the terminals, monitor the running time when ignition cycled from cold start,if its running for on from cold suspect defective motor.

I have an orange residue forming around my auxiliary water pump. In addition, the pump continues to make noise for extended periods of time after the car is off (i.e. exceeding 10mins).

What is likely to occur if the vehicle is driven with the pump disabled (by unplugging it)?

How hard/expenssive is that part to replace?

Is it possible that my auxiliary water pump is not defective, but rather, the excessive noise is being made due to another problem?

Hi-Did you get to the bottom of this? Is this a pump driven by the aux belt system, just below the alternator? My mates appears to be leaking......
