Lots of warning lights/power steering loss/failure to start - urgent help please!

Hi All,
while out on a 2 mile journey this evening, I noticed that a few warning lights had come on, and the steering went really heavy about 2 minutes after the lights (tyre pressure, ABS, anti skid and finally the electro mechanical steering). After a few more hundred yards, I decided to stop to have a check, at which point the car refused to start. I returned home to call the RAC, then went back to the car, which started again. During the return home, the same lights came on again, which resulted in the same loss of power steering, and refusal to start after stopping.
I rely heavily on my car, as I work 40 miles from home and start at 07:00, and as such I need to get to the bottom of this asap.... can anybody please give any suggestions as to what this could be?

Where abouts are you?

You need a scan with VCDS.

we are at Morecambe. RAC coming out. I am told that they have some diagnostic eqpt... not sure what though.

Their equipment should be fine, see what they say and try and get the exact fault codes off them as it'll help alot.

Tests have shown this to be an alternator failure. The 1st quote I have had was for £414 fitted.... ouch!!! I am looking at finding an alternative solution, maybe ebay. Can anyone help me determine the part number for the correct alternator please? My car is a 2008 (58) Golf estate 2.0 TDI 140. Thanks as usual, Russ
