I've used the forum search but haven't been able to find what I'm looking for and Google searches have confused me even further.

So far I've been told that I need a special drain tube for the plastic oil filter housing (and then been told that I don't) and also that I need a special cup socket to remove the housing.

Ideally I'd like to read a 'step-by-step walkthough' on how to do the job. Has anyone produced one or have plans to do so?

Can't really help other than to say I was chatting to my indy recently.
He said the oil filter is tricky to change and is quite awkward to get at, even with the car up on a ramp.

Reason I was talking to him is because I thought my car had a leak....I kept leaving rainbows in the wet. Took it back to him after he had serviced it and he checked it all out and explained to me that the filter is above a cross member and sometimes, because it's awkward, some oil can get inside the cross member then over a period of time drip back out giving the impression of a leak.
He was more than happy to clean all the underside and said if I had any suspicions to go straight back to him.

Your advice about a special tool may be true based on the trickiness of removing the filter, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for that. I should have added that I've been told that the filter canister is removed from the top of the engine and also that it comes out from underneath!

I've booked it into my local independent VAG specialist this time but it hurts having to pay for their labour if it is a relatively straightforward job that I could do myself.
