    Hello

My car originally had 6XF side mirrors: with memory function, electrically foldable/adjustable/heated. Since I found my car one morning missing both side mirrors, i replaced the left one
with a 6XL: with memory function, automatically dimming, electrically foldable/adjustable/heated from ebay.

My question is: since both the 6XF and the 6XL have the same number of wires (2 cables, 7 wires each and identical pin layout) should the auto dimming option work without making any changes,
and if not, what can I do to get the mirror to auto dim?

    Thank you

It's the glass itself that dims so you will have to get a replacement dimming glass mirror.

Is there a part number on the back of the glass?

Dimming glass of old has the black plastic all the way round it, the newer type doesn't have the plastic, but has a dotted line all the way round about 5mm in from the glass edge, if you haven't got either, then its not dimming glass.

The glass is dimming, the back side looks like this (this is a web photo of an A4 glass, but except for the shape, the layout is the same).

    $(KGrHqFHJBsFInKS9zKZBSLj6+mVO!~~60_57.jpg

Also in the car manual i read that if i turn on the interior lighting, or select reverse, auto-dimming is cancelled. I assume this is controlled by turning the power to the glass on or off.
So since both 6XL and 6XF have the same number of wires, maybe the one that powers the auto-dim is not connected in the car.
I will try an measure the voltage on the black connector.

    Regards.

Probably find there are no wires from the mirror down to the door pillars, this is standard through allot of chassis, although some are prewired if not fitted anyway, as I found in my S3 8L years back.

Bit of a tangent but when I fitted my Ali mirror housings I removed the mirrors and found 3 cables - 2 where connected for the mirror heating element but the third which was top close to the door was tucked away on both sides

Anyone thing that dimming mirrors is just the glass type and I could just upgrade myself or is there more to it?

You might want to check the price of the dimming glass before considering the retrofit.

That is the substance behind my theory

I am guessing it's not cheap then
