I removed the egr valve in order to clean it,all pretty strait forward however i managed to snap the plastic arm on the outer part of valve that operates the butterfly, the outer part is removable ,my question is can this part be purchased on its own or do i need to get a whole new egr valve?its not very clear in the first photo, the second photo is of a new egr and the plastic part can be seen just above the gasket.

You have to buy the whole unit, this has happened to me on many occasions. It is not actually the EGR valve bit itself which is behind but the anti shudder shut down flap. It is now VW part number 038 131 501 AT which is £237.08 from VW but a Pierburg 7.24809.26.0 is identical and much less.

I have never tried to remove one, I suppose a hot air gun would help soften the plastic.

NO, the check light will come on and disabling the EGR is wrong and environmentally irresponsible in my opinion, for what that counts!
