***BREAKDOWN*** Red Steering Wheel Light & 3 Beeps. No Steering/Steering Locked

My car is currently stuck down my mams dodgey lane for the night as I cant get it moved due to no steering.

Sequence of events:

It's been starting to get a bit tempremental for a while now, but nothing worth following up. It's had a few starty-upy issues (no 'ummmph'). I know the glow plugs need doing (I have them planned for this weekend) and have tested the battery, 12.5v.

Today:

I drove to work at 6am, car started fine in about 8degrees. At 10am, I went to McDonalds for brekkie as there's no canteen on a Sunday. On returning, about 15mins later, I had to stop at a barrier to key fob back in. Then the car wouldnt turn over. Next to no response when turning the key. This happened for 9 attempts then on the 10th, it turned over and I got to a parking space.
After work, the car fired up first time and I got home.

Roughly an hour later, I went to go shopping. This is the first case of the RED steering wheel light and 3 x beeps, car started first time. No steering power at all, almost locked. I cut the engine off and put it straight back on, it fired up no issues, but then an orange steering wheel light stayed with me for the duration of the run. After shopping, same again, RED > off > on > yellow. Drove away.

After going to my mams for Sunday dinner, im now stuck with the red light and no steering. Car is paralised. Engine fires up every time, but with a red light and 3 beeps.

Any advice on what it is or how to move my car so I can get it to a garage?

Is it worth me just changing the battery? Can a battery 'not work' even though its showing 12.5v on a multimeter??

Did you do what MJ advised and get it scanned for faults?

sounds like a dodgy earth cable. this may be causing a lack of power to the steering motor ? a code read is required first though, or just check each earth in turn. you would be best getting it recovered to a garage.

A3's have an issue the electric motor on the rack. Code read it first but I suspect you will need a new rack/motor/loom
