    Hi All

Got a 2002 Tdi Sport, I'm loosing quite a lot of coolant at the moment (from max to min around every 100 miles), no sign of a leak anywhere and no coolant in the oil. There is a small amount of black dust like substance in the header tank?

    Any Ideas?
    Cheers

Are your carpets wet? Any odd smells inside the car? Is your expansion tank cracked.

Everything seams normal, no wet carpets smells and no cracks it the tank.

Take off the engine top cover, the big plastic one and drive until it's up to temperature. Lift the bonnet and check for leaks they should be easy to spot. Also check at the crank sprocket as this is where coolant will leak from the water pump

Probably the head gasket, mine had exactly the same symptoms. The black stuff is carbon from the combustion gases entering the cooling system.

Bugger that sounds expensive. How much was it to get yours done?

Did it myself, I'm a mechanic. I used genuine gaskets & head bolts.

I would suggest a close look at your radiator, particularly the ends - I have had 2 of these go and the coolant loss simply evaporated from the leak as the radiator remains hot, so you never see a puddle but keep loosing coolant.

hi fire3, I had a similar problem on a `03 130 1.9TDI sport.....mysterious, intermittent loss of coolant........checked out this great forum........looked like radiator or headgasket. Rad was only 70 Euro so went for it.......Old rad looked fine ....no fix. Had tried coolant leak cure a couple of times to no avail..........resigned myself to top ups for the time being.......didn`t feel like doing or paying for a head gasket........put off the inevitable..........then...........I noticed some drips.............then it got worse.........then , with the car not just at norm temp on the gauge but run for quite a while after that.............the plastic elbow at the very back of the engine which connects to the heater pipe was leaking. drip drip but only when well heated up. 10 euro later for a new plastic elbow and all was sorted. The old elbow was cracked and distorted and the o-ring in a mess. ................you might be as lucky !!. I will be answering my own enquiring post and will supply some pics............keep an eye out for it .

    Best of luck...........regards....dannyboy 201062
