My 2006 Jetta has always had an intermittant horrible aroma inside the car. Seems worse in the summer. An American forum site I came across indicates that this is a common problem and stems from the heater/air con. It can clear when Air Con runs for a while but then returns. Suggestion have ranged from cleaning debris from intake near wipers to a cleaner apparently available to clean the heater box, which seems a bit of a job! Seems related to mildew/condensation in that area?

Has anybody else in the UK experienced this problem ??

If it's a rotten egg/smelly sock sort of smell, it's exceedingly common and well documented

As Eshrules and mycarsavw has posted, get your pollen filter changed and aircon cleaned.

My A6 smelled of eggs when the aircon was switched on and a full clean sorted it.

    Thanks for response.
Recent pollen filter & air con service did not make immediate difference. Went after driving for ages with air con full blast, now returned.
Pretty much given up on solution now. It's so intermittent and can't tie it down to specific circumstances.

Filter & aircon change did eventually shift the smell but it returned.

get an 'aircon bomb' that you set off in the back whilst the engine is running and the aircon is on full and set to recirc. you leave it 20 mins to do its stuff and it cleans and de-bacteriarises the heating ducts.

    All great advice as above

+1 on trying the aircon bomb.....the one by Comma works really well.

If that doesn't do it, then you're really going to have to do some investigating.

I inherited a 2nd hand Ford Mondeo once and I don't think the AC was EVER used and it stank to high heaven..........making me almost physically sick anytie I drove it.
The smell had basically impreganted into the fabric of the interior and nothing was shifting it.....I was sooooo glad to be out of that car I can tell you.

Hope that scenario doesn't hold true for you too

Comma 'aircon bomb' has shifted the smell for now so fingers crossed!!
If it continues to work then I will repeat the process a couple of times a year. Will be well worth the small outlay.
    Many thanks for your input.
