Whilst I was away over the bank holiday weekend, I noticed the engine emissions control system warning lamp stayed illuminated after starting the car one morning.
It stayed on for the whole journey of about 25 miles on mixed roads including motorways. The car drove fine and I noticed nothing untoward at all.
It stayed on again on the return journey. But when I started the car the next time it went out and stayed out as per normal.

It hasn't come back on again since over about 4 more journies including on a 2 hour plus motorway journey home today.

Is this something I should worry about? The car seems ok and is driving perfectly.

My wife's A3 used to have the same problem - the light came on, and stayed on for a few days and then went out and didnt come back for months. We had Audi look into the problem they changes a sensor (I cant remember which one) and told us that the problem should be fixed, but a few months later same issue.... asked Audi to check the problem again, but they told us that everything was fine..... so in the end we just ignored the light when it did come on, know that the light would go out after a few days.....

It would come on again every now and again... but would always go out after a few days sometimes even when the car was restarted...

We have change her car now... so we dont have the issue any more...

My suggestion is to try and get it to Audi when the light is on - so that they can see the issue and try to fix it.... hopefully you will have better luck than we did

Get it straight back for diagnosis.

If the light goes off before you take it in, the system will still of stored the fault code.

No point in guessing until it's been in

Hmmm. Yours is a 2.0TDi right? Late 2011 or early 2012? I wonder if it's the same issue mine had? Have you seen any issues with the stop/start system deactivating?

    Yes that's right MFGF, a late 2011 2.0TDi.

What was the issue you had?

Not noticed any real issue with stop/start system, but then again I'm not often in a driving situation where it would activate it.

Thanks for the message. I'll try to get it in to be looked at as soon I can.

You say the EML light, do you mean the same as the symbol in my post above. My manual lists that as the emission control system light, the engine management system light is shown as a squiggly line, as in the image below:

It has only happened this one time though.

EML and emission control light are the same thing. You may get a DPF light every once in a while but this just needs a 30 minute run in 4th at 60mph to clear (see below) and the affect is has on your mpg.

I had the same symbol as you, lit constantly, plus the squiggly line flashing at times. When it happened for the final time, both were on (the squiggly line was flashing not constant) and I left the engine running when I dropped the car in so the tech could see the fault.

    Cheers!

I haven't had the squiggly line symbol or the DPF one just the emission light.
One thing I have noticed happening on the odd occasion recently is, when I switch the engine off the engine seems to run on for a second. Not hugely, but I have noticed it seems to cut off slightly roughly sometimes.
I guess this might point to the same issue developing that you had.
