    Hi all,

I have recently bought a 2008 A6 3.0 TDI Avant with 100,000Kms on the clock, it has been going well for the last 4000k's, until this morning when I opened the boot and heard what I can only describe as a waterfall, the tailgate was of full of water after heavy rain over the last few days. I have removed the drain plugs and tried to shake most of the water out. I need to investigate where the ingress is happening, I suspect the RHS tail light as when I turned up at the dealer to pick the car up it was being changed. Co-incidentally or not, I started the car this evening and the fuel gauge read 0 and flashed up at me, "Please refuel", this was a bit of a surprise as I filled up to the brim yesterday and I have been getting between 800-1100kms out of a tank depending on journeys. When I got home this evening I got the Super VAG diag' tool onto it and came up with a DTC 05716 "no data". I googled the code and got nothing of any substance back but there has been some chat about it on a Polish forum. I can't work out really what the general gist of the chat is. Has anyone suffered this before? Any ideas?

Any advice of knowledge greatly appreciated! My fear of a bill from the French Audi dealer is not worth thinking about, they have stopped employing people with brains and now just employ fitters, they plug the car in, come up with a fault code that normally points to a sensor, replace said part and completely ignore the potential root of the issue. Oh, then they charge you €120 for the diagnostic and €120 for an hours labour before you even kick off!

    Tree welcome to the forum

I think (but will stand corrected) that these are two seperate issues, I don't have an Avant but there are several posts regarding rear washer piping breaking/perishing which leads to a soggy boot, one of the things you have to watch out for is it not ingressing into senstive electronics, namely bluetooth/audio/MMI functions.

As to the fuelling issue there are also a few posts, in my case an VAG independant fitted a 'fuel sender repair kit' which is effectively replacing the electrical link from one side of the saddle fuel tank to the other. This allows fuel on either side to be gauged and pumped to keep it even. If you have just brimmed your tank it's probably best you don't have that work until your at about a quarter of a tank as the fuel (once the two buns below the rear seats are removed) can slosh out into the cabin.

In my case the kit was a mere £17.20+VAT and an hours labour(£55+VAT).

Am just wondering if brimming to the very top...as opposed to stopping at first click at the petrol station has somehow contributed to our problem?

Many would say to invest in VCDS for proper diagnostics...something I may be doing next week.

    Good luck!

Mark, they are releasing a wifi version in the coming months. Which means you'll be able to use any device. Not just restricted to a pc with vcds installed

That's brilliant info, thanks guys, I think i'll see how frequent this issue is and make a call from there, best to start with the software update, then take the boot trims off and sit in the boot and get one of the lads to get the jet wash on it! I will keep you posted.
