Just got back from the MOTers this afternoon with two jobs on the list needed for a pass -

Job1: front n/s lower rear control arm

Job 2: n/s steering rack inner end

I've consulted the Haynes manual and the control arm seems fairly straight forward - the one question I have on that is that at no point does Mr Haynes mention a spring compressor... what is to stop the spring from making its own way?

The second job is a little more difficult as Mr Haynes doesn't cover it at all. Is it a job you can do in situ or do I need to remove the rack? I've sourced the part for £23 quid from the motor factors so not too much of an issue cost wise, just not sure on the technique of replacing this component. Has anyone one any history of doing this? All advice or tips welcomed!!

To replace the lower rear arm (the curved one) you do not need spring compressors, the bottom of the shock bolts to the front (straight arm), you will need a decent ball joint splitter and i usually use a long piece of wood to "maneauvre" the hub carrier into line with the new arm tapered joint . Do not tighten the arm to subframe bolt until the weight of the car is on the suspension.

By the steering rack inner end do you mean the inner boot is split, if so a relatively easy job, although a bit small on space, i have never replaced an inner joint so can't help there i am afraid. Good luck with your repairs, and try to get a quality arm like Febi, Llemforderr, Q and H, try to avoid the e.bay cheapies as you may have to replace again sooner than you want to!!
