Most noticeable when warmed up. At various engine speeds between 1300 - 1900 RPM a significant engine vibration appears and its getting worst very quickly. To avoid, I hold engine above 2000 RPM using sequential gearbox. About 2 wks ago, only noticed it at 1500rpm and under load. Now happening under normal conditions. Suspect the Crankshaft Vibration Damper. Can anyone confirm this. If so can it be replaced without removing the radiator? Thanks.

You will need a fault code scan just to be sure.

When was the fuel filter etc changed?

Hi A6-Chris. I've owned the car for about 12 months and I see that it could be as much as 3 yrs ago since fuel filter was changed! Will need to check and get back to you. Will also get a fault code scan done next week. Is the fault code linked to the vibration damper? Ta, Redser

Fault scan is good starting point could be a engine mount which could cause vibration but crank shaft vibration dampener will require visual checking...
    Customer statement / workshop findings

Loud rattling noises from the engine compartment at start, at idle speed and when driving. Power steering assistance may be stiff or various warning lights come on.

    Technical background

The vulcanisation on the vibration damper of the crankshaft has come off. As a result, the outer ring of the vibration damper wobbles and knocks against the inner ring. In extreme cases the vibration damper can damage the front of the seal flange. Because of the wobbling of the vibration damper the belt drive (for alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor) can vibrate and the idler roller (plastic roller) of the belt tensioner can get very hot, so that the plastic roller can come off the bearing shaft. As a result the belt can fall off and the units supported by the drive fail.

    Production change

    Improved production.

    Measure

    1. Replace the vibration damper (use new mounting bolts). Fit an 8 hole washer (Part No. WHT 000950A) between the bolt head and the vibration damper.

    2. The belt tensioner and the mounting bolt M10 must also be replaced.

Hi Gupsterg. My Phaeton is a 54 plate with the BMK engine, Registered Jan 2005, 90K mls. If I go down the Vib Damper replacement, then your insert on "Workshop Findings" is the parts recipe to follow. Thanks. R

I would get car scanned/inspected ASAP, engine mount will come up in that... parts are not cheap on this engine/cars...

    If it is pulley, the p/n is 059 105 251 AB , there is currently one on ebay new/genuine for £100 ish otherwise £280 ish@dealer... washer is WHT 000 950 A (x1), bolts are N 910 059 02 (x8)... I was doing some ground work for myself...

Hi. Loved your shopping list, you're obviously on top of this. Can you help with how to confirm it is the Vib Damper as it's quite a big bill to repair if it's not the cause. My local garage is not up to it so I rang main dealer in Edinburgh but he was of no help. Have changed the fuel filter and will explore a change of gearbox oil first, if I don't confirm Vib Damper. Here's some more specific info I tried to get to home in on the problem.

No noticeable vibrations until warmed up.
Appeared initially in higher gear (5th) at 1300-1500 RPM.
Severity increased progressively and became more evident.
Finally appeared readily in lower gears (3-4th) with heavy acceleration and particularly when accelerating up steep incline. Again at 1300-1500 RPM
No noticeable vibration when stationary and in neutral at any RPM.

If you can help I would be most thankful. R

    Hi,

Firstly I'd like to clarify I'm just an owner who's had to go DIY on his car more than I ever thought ... secondly I'm on here way to much ...

Thirdly you must get a VCDS/full diagnostics scan done...
or you could buy VCDS from Link:- Gendan or you could private message a forum member near there for scanning car Link:- VWAF User Location Map - VCDS - Google Maps

VCDS is great diags tool to have I've saved a mini fortune my having one at home... besides some retrofits of equipment I did with it I've done so may scans with it to i) know what work to do ii) ask someone to do ...

For instance you could scan the gearbox at home to see if gearbox is issue Link:- A6 3.0 TDI QUATTRO numbers - Page 4

You could check EGR faults Link:- BMK 3.0 TDi hunting erratic idle revs ( Have I got the most lemon A6!!! ) - Page 27

I did injector adaptation after changing them at home Link:- VW AUDI Forum - VWAF

I would not own a VAG vehicle without VCDS ...

Any VAG garage should be able to at least put car on a ramp:-

    i) remove undertray and have a visual inspection or probe the vibration damper and give an assessment...

ii) remove AUX belt and check if "The vulcanisation on the vibration damper of the crankshaft has come off."

    Regards
    G

    Phaeton Engine Vibration......solution

Well folks, it turns out that a gearbox oil change has solved the problem. Garage replaced 6 litres out of the 9 and so far no further sign of the vibration. (Will be doing another 3 L at next service.) Its was a surprise to me that a fluid can have this effect but if it reappears I will let interested parties know. Don't forget it's over £30 a litre! (I understand that VW provide a "Lifetime Guarantee" for gearbox oil. Anyone like to comment?) Thanks for the Forum help.
