So I was starting my B6 (2003) Avant S-Line the other day and there was an extremely loud POP sound that sounded as if it came from the sound system.

I was alarmed, but after starting the car the sound system and navigation still seemed to be working.

However, I have since noticed that the base seems to be reduced. There is still base there, but it seems less punchy than it used to be. At least as far as I can tell. And when I dial the bass up and down, it makes hardly any difference to the sound, even when playing Chemical Brothers' Exit Planet Dust. It shouldn't be that way, right?

This is the Bose sound system with RNS-D Navigation Plus. I recently had a specialist install an X-carlink, not sure if that is significant.

Any ideas to help sort out what is going on?

Sounds like the either the amp or the sub has possibly blown.

Check fuse 40 (25A) first. If not then the amp and sub are a pig to get to in the boot. They can be removed without completely removing the boot trim. Just requires a bit of persuasion. And don't drop any screws as the whole boot floor will have to come out f you want them back! Don't recall if the amp itself has it's own fuse as I was getting them out the way to fix my fuel flap lock.
