    Hi chaps.

After 50k of trouble free motoring the car suddenly lost power and gave me some flashing dashboard lights on the motorway last week. I took it to my local indy who pronounced the turbo as being kapput with no vacuum and with fault code p0299 (underboost) Refurb replacement would be £900.

Before I bite the bullet, has anyone else had anything similar crop up and if so what did you do about it?

At the moment the car still works and everytime I turn the ignition off it resets and the turbo works again for a while and bizarrly thrashing it a bit helps stave off the flashing lights but I need to get it sorted soon as driving along waiting for the lights is no way to carry on.

    Mant thanks

    Shadow CC

p.s. still love the car after 50k and 3.5 years just hope it's not going through a mid life crisis

Go to a proper garage. Get a proper vcds code read done. That code is usually a vacuum fault but not of you have a newer engine model. What engine have you got?

    it's a 2.0 CR 140 diesel on a 2008 manual CC.

I was just trying to avaoid VW as long as I could as I'm pretty sure it would lead to a more expensive version of the Indy's Turbo replacement quote. However that's going to be my next step but a little knowledge always helps discussions so I'm grateful for your advice

The turbo actuator on those is a well known weak point. You need a proper scan to confirm it. You won't need a new turbo, just a new actuator.

I have had a recent experience on my CC where I had a turbo fault code. I'd do as Martin says - I had a proper code scan done and post up the results.

Mine was an actuator - from what Martin and Crasher say, it appears this is a very common issue on our engine codes.

This may be the issue with yours and will be a HELL of a lot cheaper than replacing the entire turbo. My fault with the actuator was electrical, yours sounds mechanical (Vacuum - the diaphram being split perhaps?). There is a repair kit out there - part code 03l198716a.

I would look into this as a probable cause to your issues before replacing the turbo.

    Hi chaps

Just to update you all I rang a mate of a mate who is a VW mech and he came up with the same conclusion. The actuator kit was £120 and his time was £50 and it is all now working fine and dandy.

So thanks (Dave & Martin)for pointing me in the right direction and saving me quite a few quid.

£170 - massive difference to the £900 you were originally quoted. Just goes to show, it's best to ask before shelling out big bucks. That's the value of forums such as this!

    Hi lads

Do you know if i have to take off turbo to change actuator valve or it can be done without touching turbo??Because VW quoted £400 for changing it.

No it is done with the turbo remaining in situ - its a bit fiddly and requires a diag machine to set it up correctly.
