It looks like I need to have the above changed. Car has developed a rumbling vibration noise. Following guidance on here I have tried turning the metal fan in the alternator in both directions and it seems stuck in one direction and pretty much stuck in the other (certainly not easy to move move than a few mm at a time).

When the engine is running the metal fan does spin but the alternator belt tensioner seems to be vibrating a great deal (assuming that is the component with the big bolt on it on the far bottom left of this picture below).

Can someone tell me how much I should expect to pay in parts for a new alternator clutch pulley and alternator belt tensioner? and how much in labour?
    Thanks!

You need to let the tension off the drive belt to check the alternator. A lot of mechanics will put the car in the service position (front off) for this job. Parts wont be too expensive and you'd be as well to change the belt at the same time. 200-250.00 I'd estimate

You CAN do it with the lock carrier in place but it's far from easy especially if you're inexperienced

Depending on how much knowledge you have, the alternater pulley on this engine is not too difficult. You need a reasonable tool set with a selection of torque drives,ie,45 50 short and long.A pulley removal kit, some decent sockets ring and offset spanners.Cost of the pulley is about £50

You need to take off the viscous fan to get at the tensioner, plus it's still tight to change the belt, plenty of potential for skinned knuckles and mistakes due to frustration, it's not hard to put it in the service position anyway

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to pay a garage to do this work for me asap - probably at the same time as a cambelt and waterpump change.
