Own an Audi A4 2.0L Turbo SE petrol - had since brand new in 2006 - and done 125k miles. Been solid as a rock till recent, where the oil pressure light came on.

Local VAG specialist confirmed that although there was pressure, it was low - 1-1.5 bar - and did not really increase with revs. Assumed to be the oil pump at fault, and a cost of £1500 quoted for the repair. I trust these guys, but out of due diligence got a quote from the local garage that I used for services, etc. Far from Audi specialists but always been good - and on the phone he plucked the figure of £1200 out of the air - saying it was his price matching scheme.

This has caused me to wonder - is £1200 a great price, albeit not specialists - or is this all just possibly something else and I am being played.

Forums seem to indicate this to be a more common fault with the diesel engines, with the petrol version being quite rare. Any experience of this fault out there - and based on the assumption of the oil pump - do the figures quoted seem sensible..?

Before parting with your hard earned cash I would remove the sump and check the oil pump pick-up pipe for a blockage,I'm sure someone with this engine on the forum will confirm or offer some guidance.

I have always found garage services to be expensive, i now tend to use mobile mechanics as they have no overheads so tend to be cheaper, also they fix it on your drive, if your warranty is up then go for the affordable, dont forget, all these motormechanics trained at the same kind of college.

I have just had oil pump failure on my SE caused by the failure of the tensioner on the oil pump drive chain, I put a post up about it the other week Mmmm 2.0TFSI SE Quattro 120K terminal engine methinks - rebuild or replace....?

There is also a problem with the oil pick up in the sump being blocked by carbon build up especially on high mile service interval engines, I flush mine every 12k and swap the oil and filter every 6K and had no build up. Dropping the sump ain't that easy on the Quattro, the total cost for the failure on my car was £3200, £1100 of that was for the balance shaft carrier, which houses the oil pump, this was trashed when the chain snapped, I took the precaution of swapping anything else while it was in bits hence the cost...... worth doing though as I love the car.

    Hope this helps.

Well going to take it down to the local independent tomorrow and get the sump taken off to check the oil pick up pipe. Thanks for the feedback. The fault I am pleased to say has been gradual and not as severe as Nice But - so seems to make sense that a accumulation is causing the fault...

    More tomorrow...

I'm new here and I have an issue with the low warning pressure light in my 1999 Audi A6 2.8L 30 Valve Engine. I had Misfiring problems due to a blocked exhaust but when this was fixed, the oil was changed as well as the oil filter and the low pressure oil light came on after driving for about 15 minutes. The oil was changed together with the oil filter once more but the problem persisted. The mechanic decided to remove the oil pan and found out that the oil was very dirty and he also cleaned up the oil pump and used fresh oil. The problem was still not solved. I'm thinking of changing the oil pump which will cost me some bucks. But before I get a new pump, any ideas on what I can do next.

Get the oil pressure checked mechanically with a gauge.
