Hi there, i have a VW Golf MK5 1.9S, and want to replace the standard stereo with a RNS-510. Is this easy? Anyone give me advice of how difficult it is to replace it?

Where's the cheapest i can get one?

    Many thanks!

Easy to replace - you just need to remove the standard stereo and the rns slots in. It will have a quadlock connector but you will get a gps antenna with your new nav which can be set above the glovexbox when removed.

you may need a new can gatway though to stop battery drain on early cars.

all parts can be got from ebay/owners forums and you will need it coded with vcds

Gateway replacement very likely, you need later than a "K" revision, 08-ish onwards. you will also need an antenna adapter (circa £8 on ebay), as although the RNS takes the two antenna leads that your rcd 300 uses it is a different socket arrangement. Removal is easy but get a set of trim tools 5 or 6 quid on ebay. see this example of removal on you tube.

You will also need someone to set it for you with VCDS.

The Battery Drain problem is model year Can Gateway related and is only a problem when you have a mismatch. see this article for more detail on this matter.

The easy fix is to match up the can gateway with the RCD 510, but the Gateway can be a bugger depending on the model/grade of the car as this dictates where it is located.
