I retract my previous thread ultra-reliable

What a day. Remote on the car has decided to give up the ghost. Could not open the car with the plastic key either. And to make matters worse I have lost or should that be the wife has put the spare key somewhere very safe.

The AA guy has towed my car to the local VW dealer who has gained entry. They have got the spare key working in the lock with the aid of WD40. They have tried the battery reset also tried to get the key to talk but the key is dead.

    New key + coding £170.00

Also, they asked if I was aware that the DMF needed replacing. Different story to the other VW dealer. They have said £1200 to replace. VW won’t offer a good will. What should I do?

I won’t be using VW just my faithful independent.

    Help & advise greatly appreciated,

    Thanks, Rappy.

Were you aware that the DMF needed replacing yourself?...Usually you can tell if the DMF is going bad by placing your foot on the clutch when the engine is on and the car is idle...if the clutch pedal is vibrating this is one of the signs. Also when you start up the car the engine should shake more violently that usual and you might here the DMF "slipping" ever now and then while the engine is running. I have these signs at the moment but I'm not worrying about it yet, my previous car was a mondeo which I had to replace the DMF in but the problems were alot more noticeable than in the passat...I'd imagine my passat DMF has gotten as bad yet as in my Mondeo. Also if you do have to get it done your better off sourcing the parts yourself from the likes of ebay where you'll get a DMF, clutch kit and release bearing and getting your local mechanic to fix it...should work out at less than have the price

Well, at least it's not the DSG like you were worrying about. Look on the bright side, you've saved the top side of £2k.
