    Hi,

I Have recently purchased a MK5 Golf GT TDI 140BHP On a 2004 plate. It drives great however every so often the biting point is really low to the floor and occasionaly it doesnt go into 1st gear easily. Both these problems are very minor and arnt a big problem to me but do I need to prepare for huge bill coming my way? It has 105k on with Full Service history.

    All ideas appreciated...

    Cheers

It may be a sign that the clutch slave cylinder has a small leak. Depending if it is an internal type combined with release bearing have a look around the bottom of the gearbox to see if any fluid has leaked out.

Thanks for the quick reply I wil get under it and take a look when this snow as cleared up! Is the slave cylinder situated inside the transmission making it exspensive to replace do you know?

    Cheers

It will either have a plastic slave cylinder on top held to the gearbox with 2x 13mm bolts or

A slave and release bearing combo inside the gearbox bell housing.

The 1st is quick and simple the 2nd is gearbox out and replace so is more time to repair.

If it is a internal type slave then look at whether any fluid got onto the clutch also. Look at how much life the friction plate has also because if its nearing the end change it to save $$$ in the future.

    Check pics for reference.

If no leak is obvious it may be worthwhile bleeding the fluid as it shares the same resevoir as the brakes and is not normally part of bleeding the system.

Thats great, im going to get underneith it now and take a look ive just been out in the car for a drive and twice it felt like the peddle had clicked. Could this be the slave cylinder? Have you any ideas what price im going to be looking for both scenarios? Cheers for all your help pal

Ive just check the underneith out and its dry. Theres no oil leaking from anywhere.

Would this indicate that is the cylinder inside the clutch or the clutch itself?

Is there any chance it could be the fly wheel as I know these are big money?

    Cheers

I wouldn't know about costs as I'm on the other side of the world and VW cars and parts are MEGA expensive here.

If you can eliminate the basics yourself it may come down to getting a dealer or specialist to take a further look - the clicking noise may be the plastic clip that holds the clutch pedal to the master cylinder.

Difficulty engaging 1st would indicate the clutch isnt disengaging fully, try a bleed as above then I would be looking at changing the M/S
    A4 B6,A4B7Quattro,MK4 Golf,MK5Golf gone and well forgotten,MK6Golf.

i would agree with m's first reply

i had the same issue turned out it was the slave

if it is the internal slave you can bleed it on the gear box

when my slave was leaking i could bleed it and it would be alright for a few weeks

i replaced the master cylinder first as there was a slight bit of fluid around the master cylinder

then i replaced a pipe and a connector and eventually i replaced the slave and it was fine

i have a used master cylinder you can try for diagnosis if you want

and i have a slave cylinder brand new for a 6 speed external slave

let me know if you want part numbers

    hope this helps

edit: it has nothing to do with the flywheel
