Nice thread you linked to, but I guess forum admin really doesn’t like Jaguars! I found it anyway by googling the second part of the URL.

I don’t know how important it is to replace all the fluid with new, but I agree that seems like a neat way of going about it. I only have 7 litres of lifeguard 8, so will be using a simple drain and refill. I received my replacement seals today from APshop.eu, so I’m all set to replace the bridge seal and four cylindrical ones. Because I need the car until end of Aug and can then afford for it to be off the road a while, I’ll be tackling the fluid and seals change in Sept.

That is an awesome PDF, so much clearer about how the internals of the transmission works than the Audi SSP 385, which I previously read. However, if you’re interested in learning, then SSP 385 is still worth absorbing.

Thanks for the link, I will read that doc through a few times and see if it can give me any clues on how to solve my torque converter lockup clutch slip.

Well, I bought a 2011 3.0 TDI Avant and I lifted the car to check things out. The TC galley bolt is in a tight place and very close to the exhaust. It will be a challenge to reach there and install the fitting. I have 2 options: a banjo bolt or an adapter from 10x1 mm to AN8. Time to study.

Plan B. Plan A did not work.
More oil goes through the valve body back to the oil pan than through the converter when pushed through the TC galley so I had to change plans.
This is what happened. I installed a hose with AN fittings connected to a 10x1mm banjo bolt attached to the transmission. Very tight in there. Gravity flush did not work so I had to pump the fluid. But after wasting 2.5 L that went to the oil pan when only 0.5L went out the cooling line, I stopped filling. Moved on to remove the pan, filter and Valve Body. The front part of the valve body was clean being washed by the fresh fluid. I tried to plug the converter holes and push some more fluid through the converter but fresh fluid was flowing through several places in that area so I wasted a few more ml of fluid. Although maybe I should not say completely wasted fluid because later I was surprised how little fluid I had to push to have clean fluid come out of the cooling lines. I replaced the square seal, re-positioned one of the circlip retainer of a spring from the four holes, reinstalled the Valve Body, filter, gasket and pan. Than I started filling with fluid through the same line. Remember I had both Cooling OUT and IN lines disconnected where the hard lines connect to the rubber lines in front next to the coolant/trans fluid radiator. The Cooling OUT line has a longer and straight rubber section so that's where I installed the Magnefine 1/2" inline magnetic filter. After installing the filter I pushed fresh fluid through until clean fluid came out the Cooling OUT fitting. That's when I was surprised that after only about .5-.6L the fluid coming out was clean. I connected the Cooling OUT lines and pushed through the Magnefine filter and cooler until nice and clean fluid was coming out the cooler return rubber hose. I then connected the cooler return lines and continued pushing fluid until it was coming out through the filling hole in the oil pan.
This is where I disconnected the project hose and reinstalled the plug and started the engine. I then moved on to filling through the pan filler hole and set the correct level at 40*C. To my surprise I used only 11.2 L out of the 13L I bought

The end result is that I replaced more fluid than I would have done using the factory procedure. I also flushed the converter, cooling lines and cooler but I still have a lot of unanswered questions.

One thing I can say is that the transmission is not as smooth now and I believe it is because I was not able to go through the adaptation procedure. The car had 260K km but the trans fluid was in great shape. Not too dark and not too much magnetic particles. The trans was working great and I saved the adaptation data before replacing the fluid. I will see what happens after some driving and then do the adaptation.

Interesting account Pitzbury, your dedication to getting as much fluid changed as possible certainly exceeds mine - a standard drain and refill is going to suffice for me!

With 260k km on the car, I think you can conclude that someone changed the AT fluid out before you, given your description of how clean it was. 260k km old transmission fluid would be dark.

What was the condition of the rectangular bridge seal? And why did you need to reposition a circlip? Did you take the opportunity to remove and inspect the cylindrical seals which sit above the springs which the circlips retain?

Regarding the lack of smoothness in the transmission, I was told by a US based transmission specialist that even if taking the valve body off to replace seals, he would never clear adaptations and do an adaptation test drive unless he was changing something within the valve body, such as replacing any of the valves or solenoids. So I’m not sure if that helps much, but if you’re experiencing rough shifting then of course adaptations should be the cure.

What were the stored adaptation valves you noted down? Might be interesting to compare to mine, although my car is 2007 3.2 FSI with no doubt a different gearbox code.

The fluid was dark but not black. The filter was the one that it came out of the factory in 2010. No repairs on the transmission in the vehicle history. I cannot see anything wrong with the old rectangular seal. The rubber seal is not deformed at all so I did not remove the tubular ones. One of the circlip was crooked in the small channel.

I shouldn't say that the tranny is not smooth. It's just different than it was and seems to need different release and engaging pressures. I want to let it change somewhat the adaptations by itself, record the changes, do the basic adaptation myself and see what changes.

    Before data: Ch 073 -270 mbar 102.0 -8.0 ms 10, Ch 074 -80 mbar 188.0 14.0 ms 188.0, Ch 075 -90 mbar 154.0 10.0 ms 155.0, Ch 076 -20 mbar 255.0 , Ch 077 -100 mbar 60.0
The higher and in the positive numbers the more wear the transmission has. Mine looked good before the fluid change.

Interesting. I hope you’ll update this thread if you do clear adaptations and do an adaptation drive - would be interesting to know whether that makes an improvement in performance.

Your stored adaptation values aren’t so different from mine, and I’m assuming by the way that your quick charge time on clutch A is actually 8ms, not -8, unless it’s a time travelling transmission...!

I’ve attached my car’s numbers. D (which I think is a brake rather than a clutch) seems to auto-adapt more often than the others and on both our cars the number of adaptations is showing as 255, which is the max value the 8 bit memory block can record. I’m not actually clear on whether automatic adaptations stop once that limit is reached, or whether they continue but the count doesn’t go any higher. Probably the latter actually.

I started a thread on another forum so people could post their adaptations and as a group we can learn more about the range and what the readings indicate, but you can pm me if you want a link as I don’t want to post it here and be seen as trying to lure users away from this site (which I’m not!)

    Interesting topic anyway.

Double checked the pictures and realized I wrote some incorrect data on Clutch A quick charge cont but the time is -8.0ms .

Ok, not sure how to interpret that then. Audi SSP385 says the quick charge time is:

“The quick charge time (quick charge) is the first stage of the gearshift. During the quick charge time, a high pressure is applied briefly (for approx. 100 - 150 ms) to the shift devices directly before the actual gearshift, in order to fill the hydraulic ports and the clutch cylinder as quickly as possible.”

But our numbers are far lower than 100-150ms and not sure what a negative number might mean.
