    Hey,
I'm thinking torque converter . I agree, normally ZF boxes are pretty robust. I've been to one of their gearbox factories at their headquarters in Friedrichshafen for work, very impressive!

RPM flutter / fluctuation was there before the oil/filter change and made no difference. Plus it only happens when the gearbox is engaged.

Rowdy - you're not wrong but I'm pretty OCD about my cars and I watch the RPM needle moving around more than I watch the road - slight exaggeration but it is frustrating, distracting and could mean something bad down the line!

I've bought two tubes of "Dr Tranny" on ebay and will pop those in when I get the chance, doubt it'll do much.

Hi niedzial - awesome! From my googling it would suggest it's the TC although changing doesn't always cure. I'm more concerned that something catastrophic will happen to the GB whilst ferrying the family around, not cool. I don't know about yours but once up to temperature I see a marked improvement.
My 50 mile, each way, commute, starts with 5 miles of 30mph and the needle fluctuates and finishes just off the M4 motorway where the needle is steady. Going the other way I'm straight onto the motorway for 20 miles, so 70mph, and I don't notice any RPM needle wobble.

Look forward to your feedback, good luck!

I wouldn't add any additive to the oil to be honest.
I heard of this problem occurring before and other owners chasing it without any luck. Does it do it in D S and Tip?

    you're probably right!

Good point. I'll check if it's the same in S and Tip, yes to D of course.

So been to zf ... converted needs to be changes . Also as the converter dosent hold presure this has an effect on the rest of the tranny as the selenoids need to work harder to compensate . Once the gearbox is out and conventer changed they will test the rest

Bloody hell, that sounds expensive! That would be about a third of what my car is worth. Where is the ZF site you took the car to?

    Advice anyone please?
My local indi just recently done a fluid change on my 2010 A6 with the ZF 6HP19a transmission. He used Febi Bilstein 34608 6HP fluid, and replaced around 8 litres. The box has developed a slip in 3rd gear. Is this the wrong oil? Would I need to replace with ZF lifeguard 6, as the oil that came out was yellow? Audi recommend the latest lifeguard 8 (green), but apparently an update is needed too.
I'm at a loss and don't know what to do.
    Thanks.

The oil is correct as a lifeguard 6 alternative however, lots of talk that it would have lifeguard 8 on the later cars. It might be why you now have a slip if the wrong oil has been used.
