No. Tiptronic software will determine the type of oil. Pre facelifted was lifeguard 6 and facelifted was 8. You can use 8 on pre facelifted but you need to flash newer soft

    Thanks niedzial for your answer.

I have also contacted ZF Services UK Ltd and received following answer:

I can confirm your transmission is already equipped with lifeguard 8 and the relevant software. The difference between the Lifeguard 6 and 8 fluids is the additive pack that changes the way the oil operates.
    My A6 allroad is MY 2007 pre-facelift.

I am not sure if i can fully trust ZF guy because i have no idea how he know which software is flashed into my gearbox...I just send him VIN number and photo of gearbox label

    Hi all,
I have this gearbox in my 2008 A6 3.0tdi and I've noticed that at lowish speeds, below 40mph, the rev needle fluctuates 200-400rpm. This may not sound a lot but having owned loads of different cars over the years it's the first time I've really notice it.

For example if I'm driving through a 30mph limit with the cruise on the needle fluctuates although he car maintains the same speed. In my 2011 Mercedes C220 with 7g box the needle stays perfectly still.

On start up the needle moves around more than I'm used to too. At least until warm.

I've run VCDS which threw up 4 failed glow plugs. I've replaced these and the 'problem' is still there. There's no other error codes on engine or gearbox.

I'm not quite sure if I can fell the fluctuations as it might be psychosomatic, so to speak, in that I see the needle move and then think I feel a difference in the car!

I had the gearbox filter and oil changed last week and it's still there.

Car is the 3.0tdi with 88k on the clock and full Audi history. Which, incidentally, doesn't really fill me with confidence because I have to loosen the manifold cover to free up the no.1 cylinder glow plug cable as it was trapped under the cover!!

Is this just a peculiar trait associated with this engine and/or gearbox?

    Any thoughts gratefully received!

    Thanks.

    James

    Hi James,

Sounds like it might be the torque coverter but could be injector, throttle body etc.

What oil did they use? It should be lifeguard 8 (but check on this). If you can give ZF the gearbox code they can tell you the corrrect oil.

The box is very good and should be really steady. Gearbox specialists should manage to read the gearbox ecu for faults - these won't show on VCDS.

If its 'only' the revs needle fluctuating with nothing felt or heard is it truly an issue?
