b4tdi wont start/electric problems

Hi my b4 avant has been a reliable runner for nearly 2 years.

A couple of days ago as I was turning it over I could hear a intermittent mechanical clicking noise. While it clicked the cranking slowed and stopped. Reset the ignition ans would crank ok again followed by a repeat of the above. A few attempts would get the car started then it would be fine all day.

Just got in the car this morning and on the second attempt the eelectrics went off. Batt showing 12.5v but not even the interior light comes on.

I have just tried again. All dash light came on then as I turned the key all the electrics went off again.

Anyone got any ideas?

UPDATE

I just got it started with some difficulty. Nd it was running ok. I drove about 50m and it all cut out again. No light on dash. No radio. No cig lighter no interior light etc. Help please.

Try earth connection from battery to engine / gearbox

Thanks Michael. I'll give that a look tho I guess it will have to be the batt to chassis for me to lose all 12v power.

That is a possibility as the car came back from a respray recently and I have found a lot of places where the car hasn't been put back together properly. I didnt think to check the batt connections as thats pretty fundamental........

Just need a friendly passer by to help me lift the bonnet now as the release mechanism hasn't been put together correctly and someone has to lift the bonnet while I pull the lever
