Yes Mudchute, it was all really easy.
The stalk wiring loom has 5 wires, 1 goes to whichever ignition-controlled supply you want to use, I used a spur off Fuse 31 on the fusebox, which is the factory fuse for cruise control.
The other 4 wires from the stalk go to the coloured plugs, 2 to the yellow and 1 each to beige and black.

I wouldn't get too worried about the ECU pin numbers etc, they did change over the years but all you are concerned with is finding the correct colour-coded wire in each coloured plug.
Once you have taken out (ie unplugged) your ECU (I found it essential to do this as it frees up so much space), you will be left with the ECU loom branching off into 5 coloured connectors, red, black, beige , yellow, and furthest away, white.
You now need to dis-connect these 5 plugs and they are TIGHT!
Try not to damage the wiring though, with enough perseverence they will come apart.
Once all the plugs are off, you will find each coloured plug mates with an identical colored base connector situated down in the footwell area!
Totally ignore the white and red connectors as you are not connecting anything to them.
Now, when you look at these connectors from above (ie the ECU side) they are numbered!
It is then simply a case of connecting your 4 remaining CC stalk wires to these coloured connectors into the right number on each connector!
The official Audi wiring diagram shows which stalk loom wire goes to which number pin in these coloured connectors.
Depending on how you want to wire it in depends on your next course of action...if you want to wire it in 'factory style' I guess that you would then try and find pin terminals that would fit into the 'footwell' coloured plugs.
This seemed a load of hassle to me (plus I didn't have any such pin connectors) and so I simply passed the stalk wiring loom up into to the plenum area and spliced/soldered each of the 4 wires piggy-back style into the relevant coloured connector.
    Hope this all makes sense!
Going back to the ECU pin business, I did check the Audi wiring diagram to see if each wire I was splicing into then ended up in the right ECU pin number and it did!
I also checked to see if each wire I was splicing into DID NOT HAVE a corresponding pin in the 'footwell plug' and they all didn't , so I was fairly confident that I had got the right connectors!
The only caveat I have is I don't know what CC loom you are using?
I used the Kufatec loom (from Germany) and so what follows is purely based on that, so the usual disclaimers etc apply.
This after-market loom has a fuse supply wire (goes to fuse 31 remember) and 4 other wires labelled as Pin 7, Pin 8 , Pin 9 and Pin 10. Remember that this loom is made for 'later' cars so this print onto the wire sheathing is added by Kufatec to assist fitment to the later 15 pin white plug application which our cars dont have, but it will still work!
So this is what I connected; car is a late '98 AFN engined TDI

Kufatec wire 'Pin7' went into BEIGE connector to terminal number 10 ( wire= red with grey tracer)

Kufatec wire 'Pin8' went into YELLOW connector to terminal number 10 (wire=blue)

Kufatec wire 'Pin 9' went into BLACK connector to terminal number 8 (wire= red with yellow tracer)

Kufatec wire 'Pin 10' went into YELLOW connector to terminal number 9 (wire=black with yellow tracer)

If you want to read the whole of my tale of woe and how fitting it took up 2 whole damned days, have a look here.......

Great success! My wiring was identical to your description and its now working perfectly!

For the record, when previously researching I've asked and seen lots more ask if vcds lite will activate the cruise control. Well the answer is yes, no problem!

    Thanks again Nessy, absolute star!

Glad it worked, did you really dislike my above post though Mudchute? LOL
Yes, I was on the verge of taking my car to a specialist to enable cruise (oh no, more ££££) when I remembered I already had a cheapy VAGCOM-compatible cable off Ebay.
The last time I had used it (a few years ago now) the whole thing was called VAGCOM, and even though it has been re-named VCDS / VCDS Lite I just downloaded the lastest version and was able to enable cruise control in the ECU for free, RESULT!
For the record too, I enabled cruise in the ECU a few days before I actually fitted the CC loom/stalk and it made no difference to the car, so those of you who may be doing this job in the future don't need to wait until after the bits are fitted to enable it....

Ha! My fat fingers + smart phone probably hit that button by accident! Corrected now though. I had vcds lite due to doing the cambelt and needing it to adjust the injection timing. I want to adjust the IQ too once I've fitted some bigger injectors. Good to know you can enable CC without having to pay though, result!

Second thread revival on its way

Just a quick question, could this retrofit be added to a 1999 pre facelift A4 TDi (AFN) manual Avant? It seems to be fairly straight forward.

I look forward to your replies.

Yes but the 1999 will have different plugs
