Have obtained tool to remove clutch pulley, and after looking at it would it not be possible to do the following?

Loosen splined bolt with belt still attached using tension on belt to stop it rotating.

Release tension on belt with 19mm spanner, lift it off the alternator pulley, and then completely remove the clutch, it looks as if there is enough space for it to come out between the blades of the fan.

    Do the reverse to refit.

This all looks a bit too simple as the Haynes says to remove the front end, viscous fan and alternator, am I missing something?

    Thanks chaps!

Remove the alternator. It's easy 2 bolts on the alternator, there's a cutout in the viscous fan for the bolt next the engine block. lift it out. If something slips and punctures the radiator you'll have to remove the lock carrier then, this way you can do it on a bench or the ground, less than an hours work, hope this is helpful

Thanks for your quick reply, have seen your post on another thread with pictures, I follow up to the bit where you get the alternator out however I don't quite follow the next three pictures where you use the T50? Probably because I'm a bit thick!

Is the pulley clutch bolt normal removal? ie is it anti clockwise?

    Thanks Again!

I've replaced the alternator without removing the fan. The bolt was replaced then with bolt from b5 which is a bit shorter and comes out a lot easier.

You don't need to remove the viscous fan so ignore that bit. hold the alternator shaft with a t50 and turn the tool with a spanner, if you have a gun you can spin it off, loosens anti-clockwise
