    Hi all,

Maybe I'm going blind but after extensive google bashing I can't find a guide specific to my car, am AFN equipped a4.

Any ideas? I loathe to spend a million pound on a haynes manual. So far from what I've gathered its fairly straight forward IF i don't undo the camshaft pulley and reset the timing on VAG-COM after?

So far I have it down as this:

    1. Service position the front end.

    2. Aux' belts and covers off to access the timing belt.

    3. Peg the pump pulley and but a bar accross the rear camshaft locating slot.

    4. Belt off and retension (new pulleys etc).

    5. Reassemble.

Do I need to undo the cam pulley and reset the timing?

Yes, you need to reset timing and you need to take the cam pulley off so you put even tension on the cambelt ! Do you have vag com/vcds ?

Thats a VP37 pump it's set manually with a dial gauge, look on clubtdi or passatworld there's plenty of write up's. you HAVE to set the cam and loosen the sprocket

Hi, yes I've just got a copy of vag com + lead from ebay - VAG KKL USB/COM OBD 2 Diagnostic Cable for AUDI / VW / Skoda / Seat OBDII EOBD | eBay

Ok, cam pulley has to be undone etc.

Tell me about this pump timing thing? I understand the need to have it timed and therefore injecting at the correct time but how exactly is it adjusted? Do you have a link to an appropriate article at all please?

You'd need to activate that version of VCDS with RossTech here is a link showing the basic method of pump timing

There are 3 visible bolts holding the pump onto the bracket and another one under the pump. The 2 nuts on the front are accesible trough the bigger holes in the pump pulley. Make sure the engine is at 80 Celsius before making adjustments...You need to slacken the bolts/nuts and turn the pump on it's axis clockwise to RETARD and anticlockwise to ADVANCE. The pump has elongated holes so there is quite a broad adjustment on it. Mark the pump/braket with a punch/scribe as little adjustments make big changes. You will hear the engine note sound changing as you adjust the pump. Make sure you tighten the bolts accordingly ! VCDS is needed for adjustments...

Guys, my laptop immediately crashes when I plug my new cable in. It doesn't matter what I'm doing with the computer at the time I plug it in, it just immediately crashes. It even won't start up if the cable is connected. This happened after I tried to load up an earlier driver to get vag com to recognise the cable.

I didn't realise the cable was such a specialist part. After googling for faults I can see that only the uber expensive cables do the job without fault. I thought in this day and age or electronics a cable was a cable, naive...

do a system restore on your computer to before you installed the driver, then put your vcds cable in an envelope and return it for a refund. It's a manual pump VCDS can't set the timing as you have to loosen bolts etc to advance or retard your pump. It can only tell you if the timing is off. If you set it up on the timing marks and use a dial gauge it will be spot on.

All done! Its a bit daunting haing todismantle the entire front end. Passers by were pulling funny faces and and commenting on the amount of parts scattered around...

Fitting the belt itself was fairly straight forward though as was the adjusitng the timing via VCDS (If anyone in the southampton area has a need for VCDE lite drop me a line). It pulls very well now and should be ready for the ebay chips I have sat in my special drawer...

    Thankyou for your help guys
