I got it running at last, but now there is no power to the windows. I cannot find any reference to fuses. Is there one? Where is it?

Not being rude mate I haven't been near those old Passat's in years I'm old,, I forget stuff. You need to check the wires in the bellows in the drivers and passenger doors. Do you have any way of testing circuits?

When I got the car, the right hand front window was broken. The left hand window went down and up, but when I accidentally made the broken one go down, I could hear the motor running and then it stopped. I suppose it reached the end of its travel and could go no further. After that, the windows stopped working. I had one of these cars years ago when it was new and so when I saw this one I just had to have it. I repair valve radios as a winter hobby.

The regulator might be damaged from damp and lying up, they're easy enough to get out, a fuse could have blown rather than burn a motor. I suppose 1st job is find and check the fuses get the regulator out and apply WD40. I'm kinda jealous I loved the old Passat I had years ago

I just found the fault. It was the up and down switch on the door that had been exposed to the rain when the window was broken. as soon as I pulled it out, the drivers switch worked.

The control box was under the rear seats, but it was ok. The fuse is on top of the fuse panel.
Now for an oil and filter change.

One of the door windows was seized up so I took it out and rebuilt the motor. Water had got in and corroded the connection to a thermal overload thingy. I took it out and soldered in a new link.
The other window never got to the top. This was caused by a damaged nylon wheel that guides the cable.
The only problem I now have is the passenger window goes down when I plug in the switch. I have changed for a new one with the same effect. I can still operate the window from the drivers switch. I might just leave it as I hate passengers fiddling with the windows.

Would it pass MOT? I think in Ireland all windows have to open from a control on the door. My window lock is on, I too hate people fiddling with windows,

I live in France, actually. The Mot or Control Teqnique has a requirement that the doors open but that may not mean the windows. I will have to see.
