Just done the rack on my B5 1.8T, after reading many posts I was preparing myself for an all nighter!
As it happens it took just 4 hours. Maybe the 1.8T is a lot easier than the Tdi's with regards to getting to that 3rd bolt.
You don't know how it works until you take it apart!

    Hi Mike

Apologies for resurrecting this long dead thread, but I'm contemplating doing the steering rack on my Audi A4 B5 1.9 tdi (1997).

Did you ever manage to find that third bolt? Any tips on how to do it?

    Many thanks
    Niel

A good torch with a narrow beam is useful, also sockets extensions and knuckle joints in 3/8 and 1/4 and loads of patience.
Expect the first replacement to take a day.
I think you may need to tie steering column when dismantled in a way that it wont turn and damage steering angle sensor.
If working on ground, jack as high as possible. The heat shield needs to be removed but not pipe (if same as A6)

    Thanks Mike

I think I'm pretty well tooled up with extension bars and universal joints, touch wood.

Anyone else with any more advice? Specifically about the elusive 3rd bolt?

    Best wishes

    Niel

Old thread but for anybody else future reference. RHD vehicles, remove drivers side downpipe. Then you can easily access the 3rd bolt. It is possible with downpipe in situ, but its very difficult. One can also feel the bolt from above, if you remove the heatshield on the bulkhead above the turbo. Once you get the bolt out. Bin it. Next time you need to do the rack. It will be easy! Hope this helps.

    Hi Pelican
    Thanks for the input -
I never did do the rack in the end. Flushed it through with Audi fluid twice, about 5,000 miles apart, and it went quiet so I left it. It’s been three years now (I think) and so far so good. Flushing it every 30,000 miles or so since. Now on 248,000 miles and she’s still purring - I am aiming for half a million. Such a great car. Still good to know how to do it when the day comes though, so thanks for adding to the thread
