  1. Sharan 1996 1.9TDI AFN blown turbo

Got a whole 6 miles into my holiday and the turbo blew. New experience for me - very dramatic! For those who have yet to experience such a moment, the engine runs at full revs, black smoke pumps out the exhaust (big time) and removing the key or even the battery has no effect at all. Turns out that if you don't stall the engine before the sump oil (that's what it's using for fuel) runs out, it's bye bye engine/car too. Hopefully your missus won't grab the dog and run away without even so much of a "save yourself" as mine did!

Anyway - anyone had this happen who can advise me please? I stopped the engine while there was still some oil in the sump (near bottom of dipstick). No horrible mechanical sounds before it stopped (apart from the noise as it was running so hard). I guess the cat will be foobarred but other than that do you think it's worth investing in a replacement turbo? She is a 1996/7 1.9TDI CL with AFN engine (is that 110BHP?) has 147K miles, little rust and a known history so I'm loathe to scrap her if avoidable. But I don't want to spend loads of time and money if the engine is likely to be shot either.

How easy is it to swap a turbo? From what I can see it's pretty hard to get at on axle stands?

    Any help would be appreciated!

You might be able to do some of the work from the top, it's not the easiest job in the world but its doable at home. You could get the turbo refurbished or get an exchange unit. A specialist VAG breaker would also be a source. I checked fleabay, new ones for £299.00 New item should have 12 months guarantee item number 200568459232

You need to check the compression as it hydro locks and rods bend usually ! Any more vibrations than before when the engine is running will spell disaster and the rod will go trough the block in max 1000 miles or so !

Thanks both. adamss24 - how do I safely turn the engine over with the blown turbo and ensure it doesn't kick into life when testing the compression. Sorry to be thick about this but am much more familiar with petrol than diesel

You need to take glow plugs off so you can turn the engine by hand first + you need to drain the intercooler of oil otherwise the engine will runaway again ! If you disconnect the main plug from the injector pump then the engine won't fire. Also you can take off the positive feed from the stop solenoid on the VE pump, undo the tiny 8mm nut and remove the wire off the terminal...

Cheers everyone. On balance, and it breaks my heart, I've decided she is destined for the great Sharan heaven. - too many possible issues with fixing her back up. Sad sad sad. Anyone who needs some parts (excluding a turbo) for a 1997 P Reg AFN engined Sharan 1.9 TDI with just 147K on the clock please get in touch - many good (some nearly new) parts available. Such a shame to send them to the crusher!
