I know there are two engines in the scirocco 2.0t. The 200bhp one with a timing belt and the 211bhp with the timing chain.

What I want to know is,when did the new engine come in and is there an easy way to see the difference when I am looking at used cars?

    Thanks in advance.

The main difference is the end cover the belt driven one has a big engine cover fitted with an air box and the timing chain driven or has a separate air box with a smaller engine also the timing chain driven engine has a big oil filter on top of the engine on the left hope this helps

Check the engine code on the build sticker in the boot or front of the service book

What you need to know is if if has an EA113 or EA888 engine, the latter has a nasty habit of burning oil and suffering VVT problems.
