Hi crasher haven’t been on for a while. It’s a golf gti 07. I reicived the email from vw uk yesterday stating the reasons why they will not be helping me with my claim. I intend to purse it, just not sure the best route to follow. I did see two websites dedicated to this problem but they both seem to be closed! Have you had this issue?

    Dear Mr Ramsey

Further to our conversation on 7 February.

I would like to apologise that we were unable to support with the pending paint repair on your vehicle.

A car’s bodywork is made of galvanised steel panels. Through corrosion (also known as perforation or pitting) is where the steel panel rusts from the inside to the outside. This is difficult to detect because it occurs beneath the surface of the paint layer, which shows no visible effect of the corrosion until the panel beneath has deteriorated considerably. Because through corrosion originates inside the steel panel with no external factors present, it’s classed as a defect and is covered by the 12 Body Protection Warranty.

As discussed, the reason we are unable to support the repair is that the corrosion has not been deemed to be through corrosion. If support is offered on cases such as this, it is done on a goodwill basis. Unfortunately, there is no goodwill available in this instance.

Should you wish to have this matter reviewed by an independent party, I would recommend you speak with PVWI, a paint and body specialist. There is a charge to use their service; however, should they deem a mistake was made with the diagnosis of your vehicle, we will reimburse all the fees incurred by your visit and repair your vehicle accordingly, upon receipt of their report.

You can find all the details of PVWI via the following link:

    Car paint inspections - PVWI

I would like to wish you all the best in your investigation. If I can assist with anything else, please feel free to contact me on the details below and I will support where possible.

Thank you for contacting Volkswagen UK.

    Kind regards

Their reason makes sense, it has confused me for years why VW had been doing outside inwards corrosion under the inside out warranty so it looks like they are tightening things up. My friend got Skoda to do the tailgate on his ten year old Octavia where it had gone rusty under the glass but had not perforated and had not come from the inside, I said it was not covered as mine had done the same but he hammered Skoda until they gave in which I felt was wrong. The problems stems from people thinking the 12 year corrosion warranty covers all rust, when it doesn’t. I have had people ask me about the 12 year rust warranty covering the brake disc bells and then get stroppy when I say it doesn’t and they would be waiting their time.

My wings are quite clearly corroding from the inside out, started by a design fault of theirs! So I don’t think it makes sense at all! And this is just one of their excuses, I have had three more!

What I am trying to do here is play Devils Advocate and not rubbish what you think is a valid claim and also trying to help you understand what went wrong and how this works within the wording of the warranty and also why they have refused the claim. I have taken many Golf 4 and 5 wings off where there is rust around the 12 o’clock and over the last 40 years I have come to understand the mechanics of the processes involved. The rust starts at the admitted by VAG rough finished rebate edge and works its way around to the visible surface, this is surface corrosion and not perforation from the inside and if you have seen as much rust as I have, you know the difference. We have a Golf 5 in which had a bump at the front and a new pattern wing fitted, just fitting the bumper back on caused the wing to buckle at the 12 o’clock due to an arch liner hole being badly made and already it is rusting.

New to this and looking for a bit of advice. Have a 57 plate Golf GT sport diesel and noticed bubbling on the wings about a year and a half ago. Took it to my local dealer(Specialist cars) was told to email pics of it as there wasn't a body tech in at the time. Never heard back for a month or so. Went in a 2nd time and this occasion car was taken for examination. On this occasion was told it's a 3 year warranty then goodwill after. Eventually had to go back again after no contact for another month. No contribution. Phoned up the dealer(Cameron's vw) to see what they would say, only to be told it's a 10 year warranty on the wings. Anyone had any success with this type of claim recently and if so how far did you go? Is it worth getting in touch with customer services? Thanks in advance
