Really hope someone can help, 4 mechanics so far can't! My 52 1.9 tdi Quattro will drive fine but will sometimes alarm for coolant levels. Sometimes the temp stays at 90 then the alarm goes a off and all is fine. Other times the temp will clim to 115 or occasionally to 130.Of course I ease off when this happens. But then it goes back to 90 and stays there, again the coolant alarm goes off.

When all this has happened, coolant levels have dropped, but no visible leaks. Tried radweld, found it on my driveway next day. The annoying thing is it never happens during idle and it's that random that mechanics have been out driving it but nothing happens.

There is no sludge in oil filler cap and no hydrocarbons getting into the coolant, been tested. so not sure if it's the head gasket.

My thoughts were just dodgy sensor but that doesn't explain loss of coolant. I was thinking maybe intermittent pump fault? Pump fails, temp rises, pressures rises and coolant dumps out of pressure release. Then pump kicks in and all goes back to normal, minus coolant? Just a thought but I have no idea. Anyone help?

Sounds like the waterpump impeller hes de-bonded from the shaft,do a pressure test on the system to eliminate the head gasket though, this test wont show up a dodgy impeller just eliminate the H/G.

Hi. Just spoke to a vw/Audi specialist. He said to check water pump by taking small header pipe off of coolant reservoir. It should be pumping. It isn't. If I put it below the level of the reservoir it flows like a tap but I assume this is siphon effect. Putting it on the reservoir stops anything coming out. Also, just drove the car temp was at 90 and all normal. Pulled over to have a look and coolant was coming out of the reservoirs overflow valve, although I had only filled it to minimum. There also seemed to be small air bubbles seeping into reservoir from main outflow pipe, don't know if that is significant or purely by air being sucked into system when restoring has run low.

Sounds like your water pump impellor has failed. The small header tank pipe should flow into the header tank when held above it with the cap off. You should get a block dye test done too as you may have a blown head gasket aswell.
Make sure you get the Radweld flushed out quick as it's really good at clogging radiators & heater matrix's up.

I had a 1.9 TDI AVF engined A6 in yesterday with exactly the same symptoms and it has just had a new water pump fitted, 99% head gasket.

My be worth making a start on the job,if it is the HG its the belt off anyway,so you might take the front off and check the WP before spending big.

Hi guys. New water pump and thermostat, still not solved the problem.. Mechanic thinks cracked head can be only cause now.
car only cost me £2350 so not spending too much on it. Should I give or thing like steel seal a try?

Is your heater working normally? You could have an air lock which will often give the same symptoms as a HG problem. You've had radweld in the system which as I mentioned earlier is notorious for clogging up the rad, & the heater matrix , & not much else. My advice is don't put any more additives in to solve the problem, find the actual cause.
If the small header tank pipe doesn't flow into the header tank when held over it you have a flow problem, which a cracked head wouldn't cause.
To bleed the coolant system. Remove the header tank cap, put the heater on full hot, start the engine & hold the rpm,s up at about 3000 & get the temp up to 90, then hold rpm's there for at least 5 mins. Squeezing the rad hoses can help vent any air locks so having a helper will be needed.

I'll give it a go mate. The coolant is now flowing with new stat and pump but still losing coolant, almost certainly through overpressure
