I have searched around these forums and found many people reporting the EPC light but none showing any similar symptoms or solutions, hope someone can help...

My issue is that when revving anything above around 2000RPM the EPC light comes on and the I appear to lose power when moving (the revs stop increasing and the Car 'jerks') - the engine never stalls and when at a standstill the engine revs perfectly normally but the EPC light still comes on.

I friend has plugged it into his generic diagnostics kit and it reporting fault: P0321 - Generic - VOLKSWAGEN - Ignition Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance

Based on my limited knowledge and research the EPC light suggests this is something to do with the electronic pedal control switches - however the above fault code suggest others things.

I don't want to start replacing nonreturnable sensors without understanding some more - is this a common fault for this Car? If it an EPC sensors would it likely to be the pedal end or the 'engine' end?

    Thanks in advance

    Mike

It sounds like you have a sensor down - it is giving you upto 2000rpm which is limp home to get you to a garage. You could have a crank speed sensor fault, a camshaft sensor fault if fitted, a throttle body fault or a pedal fault etc.

there is information missing from one of these and therefore the ecu cannot safely determine what to do. You would need to get a diagnostic session carried out to determine which information is missing and what needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the feedback, the secondary test using the move advanced testing equipment did not provide any further information. I therefore renewed the crank sensor (28GBP), cleared the fault codes and all appears to perfect so far

    Thanks again

16705 (P0321)- Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Implausible Signal

    Possible Symptoms

    • Engine shuts off
    • Engine doesn't start
    • Speedometer inoperative
    • Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) flashes

    Possible Causes

    • Engine Speed Sensor (G28) loose
    • Engine Speed Sensor (G28) faulty

    Possible Solutions

    • Check Engine Speed Sensor (G28)

    Special Notes

    • The Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is also used as a reference sensor for the crankshaft position and correlates with the Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1 (G40) and Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 2 (G163).
      • When an engine will not start due to mechanical timing or spark/fuel related issues it is not uncommon to set G28/G40/G163 fault codes. The basics should be checked if this code returns after extended craning and a no-start with a new sensor installed.
