only thing i can think of is that i removed a hardwired telephone setup on thursday. all was working fine until saturday afternoon. could this have something to do with it?

It looks like the CAN BUS line is broken, was the phone kit an aftermarket fit? As you have genuine VCDS, join the Ross Tech forum, get verified and post on there as there are some very clever and helpful types on there.
