    Hi,

I have had a problem with my MMI for a while. The whole system clicks on and off every three seconds. Audi diagnosed the amp as the problem. I have just replaced the amp and still have the same problem.

There is a clicking sound from underneath the base speaker on the back shelf and I'm wondering whether there is something in there that is causing the problem.

Any help or experiences greatly received as driving without any entertaining is now reaching it's limits.

    Cheers,

    Al

I get that clicking when I'm working in the car and the battery is almost flat. No idea what makes the noise, or why it is linked to the battery, but it doesn't seem to do it when the battery is in good condition. And sitting in the car uses so much battery power, particularly if the ignition is on.

Have you looked at your battery condition meter to see how its doing?

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. The battery is brand new in fact just a few months ago. The clicking noise exactly corresponds with the MMI system switching off then back on. The MMI display screen remains on but the radio or cd music goes off, the white display for the radio on the small dash screen goes off as well. The telephone won't connect and if I try to set the sat nav it just jumps around the menu each time it clicks on and off.

Be really glad to get to the bottom of it.

    Cheers,

    Al

When the battery was installed did you reset the battery condition module?

The MMI switches itself off if the battery condition module thinks there is a battery problem, either that the battery is too low, or that the rate of usage is too high.

Mine was clicking a lot on Saturday whilst I was working on the car installing new rear seat monitors, I had it on charge, but I think my 'smart' battery charger fights with the Audi's battery condition module, so they both end up confused. I then disconnected the battery from the car, charged it on its own, and the clicking was gone when I continued the work on Sunday.

    Hi,

Yes it ws fitted at a garage and it had to be coded in or the car wouldn't even start so that parts all ok.

    Cheers,

    Al

I get the clicking when the battery is a bit low, it was doing it at the weekend, but just been doing some work on the car tonight and it was silent; I've been using it all week, so the battery will be in good condition.

I also found the problem when I disconnected the fibre-optic cable from the back of the CD player. That forms a complete loop round the car, unless you disconned something as I did. The clicking seemed to coincide with the red light flashing. Don't know if that helps?

When I disconnected my fibre MOST bus connector in the glovebox to fit an additional mp3 player, I could hear the same clicking from modules. It may be worth doing an Autoscan with VCDS and then a MOST bus diagnosis. (You need a fairly recent paid version)

    Hi,

Thanks for the advice. The car has been to Audi who assure me if definitely the amp. £1100 fitted. Gulp. As it has component orotection it seems only Audi can code it in. The MMI mechanism also needs doing so it looks like a nice £1600 bill is coming my way.

This technology is great, but when it fails the expense is painful. I long for the halcyon days of fitting an aftermarket amp and stereo but that's seems impossible on the Audi's of today.

Off to look at a Ford Anglia.......

You don't need to pay anything like that. Get the part number, use ebay european search to find a good secondhand part from a German breaker, keep the receipt. Fit the amp yourself (its really easy) or get it fitted by an independent. Then go to an Audi dealer, with your receipt, to get component protection removed. They will check with the central Audi database to make sure the part isn't registered as stolen, or removed from a written-off car, then they will authorise it onto your car.

Same story for the MMI, I'd be very surprised if you pay half the £1600 you've been quoted.

And with the money you save you can get that Ford Anglia you've been lusting over

Just noticed that you said in the first post that you've changed the amp. What happened there?
