I'm still having pause issue at startup ... no faults codes either
I have been toying with idea of battery change.. even though no faults found by a workshop... relays was next thing...
I'm hoping the workshop get to bottom of it whilst doing the chains...
But I think now I'd just be happy with no chain rattle can live with pause at least nothing beeps or errors when this happen

I have added more info to my answer but from now on just post the fault events in full in the control units so its easier to work with

I feel we have a corrupted control unit or insufficient voltage and that could be a sticking relay/bad earth/corroded contact causing resistance or the switch command from the ignition is briefly failing

Now that could mean the switch, start authorisation control unit or simply a 15 relay failure but one thing we do no is the engine ecu drops out over the can and drive network so is it supply or consumer

Must go now as I have a cambelt to fit

It's not the battery, new Audi Varta one fitted, coded OK, faults happened again second time I went to start the car. Turned the key to pos1 only.

Turning the key off and then back to pos1, twice (before brake warning signal on DIS) corrected the problem car started perfectly with no other problem.

so no alarm trigger and the engine starts ok now?

if so we just have the dash warning error?

if you just try to start as normal what happens ?

connect vcds turn ignition to position 1 goto address 19 mvb 200 read out the 15 (position 1 for the key) feedback when the error occurs

also in 19 look at 125 126 see if you have a flickering 0/1 status on any of the drive can control units showing coms errors

ideally you are looking for a 0 (can off) to isolate the control unit corrupting the drive can signal or can wire/connection

I seem to have confused things a little. The brake warning on the DIS and the alarm bleep to notify you of the problem come on a few seconds after I turn the key to Pos 1. I know the fault has occurred before this when the glow plug light stays on and all the other warning lights also stay on. When I see that happen I turn the key back to off, if I left key at Pos 1 the brake warning will sound.

Next time it happens (which at this rate won't be long) I will record the dater on those MVB's in address 19 and post.

If I try to start the car what happens? Last time I tried to start the car with this fault the engine turned over and continued to turn over after releasing the key, it did not start. The engine was hot after a short journey. Previous attempts to start have mostly been short and unsuccessful but it has also started once or twice with a cloud of smoke, I ran the car briefly turned off and it restarted perfectly as the fault had gone.

I had put this behaviour down to the glow plug circuit not being active when the fault occurs. If the 3.0tdi engine is warm should it start OK without glow plugs or are glow plugs always critical for starting?
If the fuel pump relay J317 was not working properly could the car still start at all? Is it operating a low pressure fuel pump from the tank or a high pressure injection pump on the engine?

Will try starting it again next time after reading the codes.

Latest results.

So, this time I recorded the mvb's which took a few minuets all the lights on the dash stayed on esp,abs, level and the brake warning on dash with three bleeps. The glow plug light had stayed on but by the time I had read the codes this light was out. Went to start the car and it started perfectly. All the other warning lights stayed on until I cleared the codes(engine running)

The results of the mvb's don't show any problems with control units at the time of test, all are recording 1.

So I think no joy there.

The battery looks to be low 12V and 12.10V, 12.2 recorded on my meter at the battery. Should be higher but not sure what the charge of the new battery was and haven't been on a long journey. Anyway I recorded the battery and charge MVB's in add 61, at tick over. The battery meter showed just over 14v at battery with car ticking over.

I had put this behaviour down to the glow plug circuit not being active when the fault occurs. If the 3.0tdi engine is warm should it start OK without glow plugs or are glow plugs always critical for starting?

This is my take on glow plug light... just like the other lights in cluster it must light up just to show it is working..
I think on my VW only in winter did I see it stay on longer than the other lights in cluster and it was negative outside temp if my memory serve me correct...

I had my car now 11mths, it was about 3mths in that chain rattle start then starter pause started happening...
Usually when I initiate starting of car when pause occur car turns over for a second then stop turning for second then starter kick in again and it start with nothing more then the occasional smokey exhaust due to outside temp or what normal for desiel when cold and first start...

Only about 4-5 times sporadically car over my current ownership period it would not even initiate starter... but no faults, if turn key back to removal position and started start process again everything work ok...

I have tried starting my car instantly when get in wait for no lights to go out on cluster and always start quickly regardless of first start of day/ car hot or cold...

If wait for lights to switch off again no noticeable difference first start of day/car hot or cold...

If the fuel pump relay J317 was not working properly could the car still start at all? Is it operating a low pressure fuel pump from the tank or a high pressure injection pump on the engine?

Again only my understanding for when looking into chain rattle high pressure pump is mechanically powered and has elec.control and relay is for the low pressure pump from the tank...

Hi Gupsterg,

The glow plug light does behave differently. I know the fault is coming as soon as I turn the key to Pos 1 because the glow plug doesn't come on straight away with the other lights, there is a second delay then it comes on and stays on. Now I don't know how long it stays on for, but some time.

I had seen on Audi portal, that yes indeed the 317 relay does power the tank pump. I was wondering if this relay was playing up could the car still run be it briefly. I think it's not starting because of the glow plugs and what ever is causing the problem is a brief blip. Once the glow plugs had operated and the glow plug light went out the car started no problems. It is interesting that you think your car starts fine without the glow plugs having time to work but they could still be super hot as the car is turning over and heating the diesel.

What I do know is that this is the first time the car has started fine when it has this problem and it is the first time I left it lit up that long. So J317 not working throwing up faults, with no diesel won't start, then J317 starts working again? Or glow plugs not switching on because of completely different problem and won't start? Or both? Or neither?

Has the problem already cleared itself when I checked the MVB's????

Common problem here is all the question marks in this post!!!!

Again mind working over time but not really having any clue.

Hope the expert v8tech is able to help further. Change a relay or two and see what happens?

you need to check the ecu switched earth as mentioned yesterday and also the voltage input and earth to the engine ecu

the engine has no error but the control units on the can and drive are having problems hence the brief warning and fault codes for missing command

you have either a voltage interruption or network error

as the engine ecu is fault free

Just an update,

I have charge the battery fully, it was up over 13Volts

Also I checked the earths for the ecu (I believe). One on top of bulk head by expansion vessel and one plug in the wiring loom located slightly to driver side clipped to rear top of bulk head. Also found another earth point below brake master cylinder in bottom of plenum chamber. All these looked clean and had zero corrosion.

Didn't know how to check the switch earth etc. So I have replaced relay J317 (614 on it) part no. 8EO 951 253 in position 3 under ecu.

I will obviously let you now how things go in the coming weeks, hopefully fingers crossed you won't here from me for a while. No news will be good news!
