At first look I'd think that maybe the EGR valve was sticking open and may need a strip and clean or replacement.
this explains the EGR very nicely - http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/e...ogging-TDI.htm

I offer this as a potential cause as you mention that it seemed fine after a restart which would force the EGR closed and reset the system.

I would have thought that if the MAF (Mass Airflow Meter) was going to cause an issue that noticeable it would have flagged up a warning light and for it to revert back after a restart seems a bit too ON/OFF for a MAF problem.

After years of torment living with an Alfa I bought myself a Seally code reader ( like this but more expensive - http://www.ankaka.com/professional-g...ries_p523.html ) and now with my iPhone app I can plug into most vehicles and download almost any fault code, reset them and using the iPhone it would allow me to identify any errors - as the goodies would say - anything, anytime, anywhere. If you have an iPhone you may find that for £30 the OBD II reader it could help you a lot and your mates.

The VAG reader is more expensive and requires a laptop but if you have these then it is a better option.

After a quick Google maps search, MFGF (https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/m...hp?103672-MFGF) is up the road in Stoke On Trent, I think Kite(https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/m...php?23308-kite) is up there too both of which have VCDS.

Although it may be a bit short notice for both of them though!

Have look here https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/f...sers-Locations also for people in your area.
